Quilt for my Sister
1 Attachment(s)
My sister loves to read, so I thought this kinda looked like stacks of books. She lives at the beach, so seems drawn to blues and greens. There are about 20 blocks mixed in that came from my grandmothers old hankies. As I look at it again and again, the orange seems to be a pop of color that works, and other times I think it sticks out like a some thumb...Help...

Fun "stacks", and great colors. Neat to incorporate some of granny's hankies! But personally, I'd remove the orange ones. Perhaps put them around the label on the back. JMHO~
Pretty colors, except for orange. It does draw your eye to it.
Id take the orange out too, or add more of them
I am a perfectionist. Take the orange out. You want a soothing quilt. The orange just screams loud. Just my opinion. I am sure she is going to enjoy this quilt with a book.
I like the orange! :) For me, the orange adds interest and cheer.
I would change it up a bit, though. My idea would be to cut the orange in half and insert more of the smaller pieces here and there throughout the quilt. I would make it an odd number of pieces too, with 3 the minimum. I think having just 2 large pieces the same size as the blue pieces makes the orange too flamboyant. Think accent color, which needs to be a bit smaller. |
I like the stacked book design and the orange really distracts my eye away from it. I would use them to make a label for the back.
I actually like the orange. It works very well with the blue.
Or maybe just slivers of orange inserted at the edges of some of the blue pieces. Slivers would add pops of color without dominating.
I like modern looking quilts in monochromatic colors with bright pops of color, so my vote is to leave the Orange in it. If your sister is more of a traditionalist, think about taking it out.

Orange is exactly opposite blue on the color wheel. Unfortunately for you, this means that it provides the most contrast of any color. This is why it sticks out so much and disrupts everything.
I agree with the others that you should either eliminate it or move it to a spot where it won't make a spectacle of itself. (Just so you know, orange is my favorite color. It hurts to advise you to re/move it!) |
The quilt is going to be very matchy-matchy without the orange accent. To me, you either need more orange slices on the front or make them smaller. I like the orange.
You're right. The orange would be better suited to something that has lime and other brights.
I would also remove the orange on this quilt. Just seems to be distracting to me.
I agree with the majority, orange should be removed and used when making the label. Love the blues.
Does your sister like "POP" or does she prefer serene?? You know her better than we do. If she is a POPPER, add more orange. If her style is serene, take it out.
I'd take the orange out. Love the pattern.
Leave the orange. It's going to be a great quilt, just as you have it laid out.
I think the orange is great just like it is. If you remove it, the look is very nice because of your fabric selections, but the orange provides added value of character and interest. I am not saying the quilt would be boring but the orange adds spark and pzazzzzzzzz to the quilt. I vote for keeping it in.
It is beautiful and thank you for asking our opinion. Karen |
I would not use the orange. Like someone said I would use it for the label if you are putting a label on it.
......and quilt in the titles of classic books on all the book spines. :D
The orange has meaning for you. It would be fine if there were more of them. At least three. Five sprinkled around would be better. Find another soft orange to add to the colorway, then put the two hanky pieces toward the center and three of the other orange sprinkled around closer to the edges.
YeS that will work, if orange is used it Need's to be more balanced .
Personally, I prefer it without the orange |
If you decide to leave the orange, you could use an idea from interior design. Interior designers are taught to keep accents in odd numbers. Sprinkle another one or three in there's?
I would take the orange out. It is very distracting and draws the eye to it. Your quilt is very nice and relaxing very much like reading a good book. I like the idea to use the orange for the label. Another idea is use the orange on a matching pillow.

I would either remove the orange or add at least three more. I think it is only having a couple that makes them stand out rather than be a design element.
I like everything except the orange, too. Just too different.
Although pretty, I think I would pull out the orange ones as they really pop out against all the blues and greens. Pretty quilt though.
I'm for no orange.
I would either remove them or add more for an odd number, maybe 7. But do what you think your sister would like best. My preference aesthetically would be to make it only blues and greens, though.
I wouldn't use the orange! it screams "look at me!"
try adding at least one more piece of orange. I know in designing flower beds it's important to always have at least 3 of any plant--always an odd color, not even. If you don't like the look then, take it out and use to surround the label.
Yeah, here is another vote to take the orange out, I can see both sides, the orange is the pop.
Most of you are not understanding that the orange is important. It has meaning for the quilter and will have meaning for the recipient. These are grandmother's hankies. So taking it out is not an option. Making it more "classy" is what we need to do.
So, I decided to take the orange pieces out of the stacks. Since I don't have any more of that color, I think I am going to look for a border fabric with the blues and greens and a bit of orange. Then, I am going to use the orange pieces that I have from the hankie, as corner medallions for the border. And maybe do a scrappy binding with bits of orange. Thank you everyone!!!
Oh, please keep the orange. It adds a needed spark. But I agree that I'd like to see at least 3, preferably 5 scattered instances of orange or another warm color.
