I am rather new at quilting, but have just finished a quilt top. It has 3-D pinwheels and my question is this....do I have my quilter quilt "around" the pinwheels to make them stand out OR do I have her quilt "over" the pinwheels to make them more secure and tack those flaps down? Thanks for your opinions and advise! :?:

I think the whole idea is to add dimension, so I would have her go around, not over.

Ditto!

If she is going to quilt around the pinwheels the may cost more because it would be considered custom quilting as opposed to pantographs. So best to talk to her about it first.

depends on what you want- do you want the flaps to flap? or do you want them stitched down?
it is your project- do it the way you want it done- and you need to talk to your quilter about it- to see what she thinks best too- but really it comes down to- whether or not you want the flaps stitched down or not.

I don't know who the quilt is for, but, if it's for a little one, they love anything that sticks up, unties, little pockets, etc. I have made several with the 3-d pinwheels and the little ones just love them.

If you don't want them to be loose, you wouldn't make 3_D ones! I definitly wouldn't quilt over them.

I would quilt around them

Agree!! If you went to the work of making 3-D Pinwheels, why would you now want to un-3-D them?? You'd kind of lose the effect!! And you might as well have saved yourself the work.

When I read the question, I was thinking you were talking the traditional flat pinwheels, and I was going to suggest a spiral sort of quilting on each pinwheel, to give a spinning effect .... but for 3-D, quilt around would be the only thing that would make sense ..... of course, JIMHO ... do what suits you BEST!
