Are you looking for a free pattern? Have you seen one in particular that you like? Would you prefer appliqué or paper piecing or regular piecing? The cardinal is such a gorgeous bird, but not seen normally in my area. I have made an appliquéd one from a magazine pattern years back.... will see if I can find a photo.

I have seen fabric that has cardinals on it but I have not seen a pattern. I know there are patterns for stained glass, maybe three are patterns for stains glass quilts that have cardinals on it.

google paper pieced cardinal quilt block - many to choose from!

I have made many wall hangings from Petal Play of the cardinal. Maybe you could adapt the pattern.

Already 6 replies!! You all are the greatest!!! I'm going right now to check 'em all out!! I don't know what I want to do... well, actually, I do... I want to do it all: paper piece, applique... I miss my sewing/quilting/applique/hand work time so much!! I absolutely LOVE the holidays... even the crazy schedule... but I also LOVE my quiet, rather slow life, too!! Will be getting back to that soon!! Cardinals, Cardinals, Cardinals!!!
and Thimblebug... gorgeous!!!! Thanks for sharing!!! |
And they're all wonderful!!! so much to choose... can hardly wait!! Love you all!!

I have two patterns with cardinals on. One is from Country Threads and the other from Prairie Grove Peddler . The one from Country threads I have made. It has four cardinals on it with log cabin blocks around the outside. I will tryto post a picture later of the one I have made.

Eleanor Burns has a lovely book out called "Quilts Through the Seasons". Under the winter section there is a Lodgepole Pine Quilt that can be made in many sizes and there is an optional Red Cardinals section on page 52. Perhaps this might appeal to you. Happy holidays and quilting!

Have you seen this one? http://www.countryjunktion.com/blocks/Cardinal.html

I'm starting one now. It's cardinals that I am fussy-cutting and then putting a border around each block and doing 12 X13 blocks.
|
Here the one I have saved that is applique but very easy.

I am very poor at applique so I opted for the cardinal fabric, fussy cutting and framing the cardinals in a pieced block. Pretty fast and not too difficult over all.

This is without a doubt the prettiest and most lifelike quilted cardinal that I have seen. We have them at our feeder each day about the time that we also eat. The feeder is about 7 feet from our table and we even joke about them hearing me call DH for a meal and magically, they appear. Cardinals have always been my favorite bird and it is so rare that you find one in a picture or on fabric without snow and snow seems so out of place here in Florida. Thank you for showing this wonderful bird in its quilted glory! I guess that I will have to appliqué one as I hate to paper piece. Again thanks for showing that making such a beauty can be done.
