Wow, Alienquilter, you are amazing! I'd been following this thread, hoping that someone would be able to explain how to piece this...it just looked fascinating. Hmn, I may sign up for the course just because I'd like to learn 'step-down piecing'. Thank you once again for finding the answer!

Looks like LOTS of partial seams...I don't mind doing some, but that would be a whole quilt of partial seams from what I can see.

Well, I still haven't figured out how to do the stepped down piecing for the pattern you show - guess I'll have to buy the book (although I've only been able to find the eReader veersion). I did run across this tutorial on Seminole piecing. It's not exactly the same but it shows how to think about piecing in another way besides traditional strips.

I just knew I could rely on the quilt board to have the answer. Thank you alien quilter for the heads up with the Craftsy class. Looks like I am not the only one signing up for this class.

I have been to many of the classes from the same teachers that now have Crafty classes. I have paid $65 and more per class and traveled several days for some of them. Crafty classes are the best value around even at full price.

I agree with BellaBoo. I have signed up for several Craftsy classes. I don't even have to lug my heavy machine around. Also, like to sit at the computer with headphones on in the middle of the night when I can't sleep. And watch different techniques over and over again until I understand it. Plus there's a place to ask questions where the teacher and other students can help you out. Kind of like this forum!

I've just watched the video lesson for the second time. What an interesting way of doing this block! It is definitely the kind of method that needs to be seen (and tried out). I'm going to try it out as soon as my current project is ready to leave its home on the design wall.

Identifying quilt patterns
 

As with this pattern, sometimes it is difficult to identify patterns. Look at a corner of the quilt--any quilt. That's where the whole block is located, which makes it easier to find the block's borders.
