I didn't find dresden plates at all difficult and i'm new to hand applique. So I think the fans would be even easier. I'm going to try those soon.

I'd rate it as "Easy"

I would rate it confident beginner at least.
The fans can be hand or machine appliqued. Either way I would use a no melt plastic to turn under the edges of the sections of the fan in order to get them nice and even. this can be done by cutting the plastic and turning under the top before sewing the petals together. This will make it easier to do the applique. If you put a quarter circle at the base and do the same turning the edges, then you don't have to deal with all those points coming together. Accuracy of seam allowance is important. If you know someone with a Accuquilt cutter, then cutting will be a breeze. |
I think the GF is an easy pattern. I've made 3 of them for my three grandaughters. The fan blades were made from scraps and each girl had a different color for the centers. One was pink, one lavender and one yellow. I machine appliqued the fans onto the white on white blocks with invisible thread. They went together very quickly.

I love that pattern. Its one on my list. I won't be making a hexie for quit some time. Its a pain in the you know what. I'm so frustrated with it. Had to put it down for awhile.

thanks to all who answered my question about becomeing a regular on the board

Hi Glenda. I have made several and even used this pattern when starting new quilters learning applique. This is a big favorite. One lady sewed lace at the top of the fan where its sewn to the block. It was so lovely. Good luck with this easy pattern.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I am going to experiment with the pieced and the applique ways of making these blocks. You are the best!
|
Glenda, I'm sure you can do the GF with no problems, but what do you think of using a different quilt block and creating your own tradition. There would be a difference, and you can add a tribute to your Mom on the label

I did this one years ago with the lace - no pattern - and it was really easy.
