Quilt Patterns with Multiple Sized Blocks

I am thinking about making a quilt for a Christmas gift. I am wanting to make a quilt with multiple sized blocks in it and I am wondering if anyone has some pattern recommendations? I am hoping for a queen sized quilt and I don’t mind buying the pattern if I like it. Thanks!

Look up Designs by SarahJ. She has a few that use different size blocks.

Also, Google "Random Ohio Stars" Quiltville blog. This one is a free tutorial, easily expanded.

I recently saw one in a magazine by Kaffe Fasset. done with striped fabrics. small, medium and large blocks. all strips going around a center square. very interesting. no pattern though, just photo in British magazine from a few years ago. i want to make one.

check Pat Sloan one of her quilt alongs has one with various size blocks and she offered two settings not sure think it was Soltice quilt along

Thank you for the responses so far. I really like the Pat Sloan Solstice pattern. It's only 86" square, but that could easily bump up with borders.

the Painted Desert one uses different size blocks with lots of strips.

I made a t-shirt quilt with different size blocks. The idea is to do multiples of some dimension and then add the 1/2" seam allowance. Mine had 4.5", 8.5", and 12.5" blocks, and once they're all made they can fit together very nicely. Putting them together is like solving a puzzle.

I have this pattern begging to be done. Would love to see it in different colours.

Jen Kingwell has a lot of patterns that use multiple size blocks - and we have a forum on her patterns on the "challenge" section of the board.

If you are feeling adventurous you can make your own using quilt blocks from quilter's cache. http://www.quilterscache.com/QuiltBlocksGalore.html

You just have to make sure your blocks have a common denominator, usually 3 because so many blocks finish at 12". You can make 3", 6" and 9" blocks to go with the 12" and piece together and no reason you can't go bigger on some like 15" or 18". Do not under estimate the power of filling strips and units like a FG unit that is evenly divisable by 3 (if that is the number you choose). Graph paper is your friend in these cases.

Did you see the sampler that Moda did last year?
You can find all the blocks here.

Check out the Turning Twenty books. They have several patterns that use various sizes of square and rectangular shaped blocks, and by adding a border or two, you can have a generous queen sized quilt.

I used one of their patterns, and instead of merely fabric, I used Christmas redwork type machine embroidery designs in several of the blocks, and also used primarily quilter's flannel for the remaining blocks. It was backed with flannel and my daughter uses it every Christmas!

Moda Bakeshop is doing a Christmas countdown. There will be 25 blocks of
different size.

I did this one last year and I loved it! The directions were excellent. http://www.happyquiltingmelissa.com/...-along_30.html

I collected so many fabrics for this quilt that I think I've decided to make this one with all the leftover fabrics. https://smile.amazon.com/Its-Sew-Emm...s%2C193&sr=8-1

This is perfect for me because I have elected to not do Bonnie Hunter for the first time in years.

Please try again. May need to reduce the size?

There is a free QAL at Bee in My Bonnet blog by Lori Holt, that is just finishing up. It's called the Vintage Block Along. All the blocks and the layout are free and the blocks are of various sizes. Here is a picture of the blocks as she is putting them together.

The link is: https://beeinmybonnetco.blogspot.com/

I am in the process of making the blocks, but with school and Christmas, it may be a little while before I get them ready. But I am really looking forward to making all of them...and it's free!
