Quilt restorers

Do quilt restorers buy old quilts to use in their restoration? Thanks.

The few that I knew in the business were paid for by customers to restore a quilt. I haven't heard of anyone buying a quilt to restore it.

I suppose they might buy an old quilt that isn't worth restoring if it has fabric that would help in restoring another quilt.

I have a friend who restores quilts. She has restored for customers and recently she was at a yard sale and saw one in the trash and asked if she could have it. It was a queen grandmothers flower garden. She cut off the real damaged portion and she has a stash of vintage fabrics so was able to replace some of the pieces. Turns out it is a very good twin size quilt that she is now selling for $200.

She prefers to restore that to quilt new....go figure. She is very good at what she does.

I often sell "cutter" quilts, comforters and tops to people who restore quilts and are always looking for old (original) fabrics.
