GF and I were talking on another forum not related to quilting. But a question on quilt shops came up and I did not know the answer.

Is all the fabric in quilt shops made of cotton?

Jim's Gem 04-01-2009 01:06 PM

The "Quilting" fabrics usually are. Many quilt shops will also carry wool as there are some quilters who want to make wool quilts as well as the wool penny rugs and stuff. Some "Quilt" shops also carry other fabrics as well for other hobbies but most of those will call themselves "fabric" stores. Hope this helps. Of course the battings are another story, there are several different fibers used in batting so many will carry several types.

Thanks Gayle that does help. She was concerned also since she can not wear anything but cotton. But that was not as I said where the question came from it was just another after the first.

While the majority of shops stock cotton exclusively, some have exotic silks and synthetics for crazy quilts. I've also seen silks for dyeing.

From Don--isewman1.-- I know when I usually go to quilt shop, I usually ask if the material is cotton/cotton poly.. I havent really had any problem's with what I use.. I sometimes, tell the person, what I'm going to do, and I get the service person's 2 cents worth..

It usually depends on what the interests of the owner are.
At one quilt shop in our area, you will find minkee, and wool, canvas, and oil cloth for diaper bags that they carry the pattern for.
I go to another quilt shop for fine clothing fabric, leather, and fleece, plus a good selection of 100% cotton.

Omak what is Minkee? Never heard of that fabric.

It isn't really fleece ... but it is like a fur of some kind.
I don't like touching it, it must be like a micro fiber of some kind.
One of my friends has figured out that it stretches in one direction, and she uses it for quilt backings.

You can also look at the end of the bolt, where the label is, and it will state what the composition of the fabric is.

sometimes you will see rayons in the quilt shops too. in addition to the data on the labels, the price might give these away. they are usually more expensive than the cottons.
