The part with the big quilts--was off limits to photographs, but I took 40 elsewhere. :D Most of the rest involved small quilted pictures that were inspired by another piece of art--whether a painting or sculpture. When we went to the gift shop--I was shocked. The prices on the pieces in there would make you fall over. Here are some examples.

The orangey one on the wall was over $2000. The tiny rectangles were $125 each, and the other quilt was in the hundreds.

I'll post more pictures....

And more...

Note:--switch the last two--the last is a close up of the one that's first.

Last ones for now.... I'll be happy to post more if anyone really is interested. :D

Do not like the tiny rectangles at all and would never pay 125 dollars for them either.

henryparrish76 02-09-2008 06:01 PM

I LOVE the neighborhood scene one!!!!!! :)

ccbear66 02-09-2008 07:50 PM

Those are really pretty but I personally would never pay that much for them.

I have some close friends who belong to an art guild. When they have their quilts in a gallery show, they are required to put the pieces up for sale. If there are pieces they really don't want to sell, they overprice them this way. I also have spoken with several national instructors who sell their quilts for thousands of dollars and in that case, you are paying for the name. I'd have to say whoever priced the above quilts either fell into one of the two above categories or else they are simply very hopeful that some idiot will come by and actually pay that kind of price.

I would expect much more of a quilt for that kind of money, but that is my personal opinion. Actually, my personal opinion is that I can make my own for much, much less.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. Several of them are amazing!

Thanks so much for sharing. The birds where my favortite. I guess I'm a visual person. I figured at those prices, you where defintley paying for the name. Maybe the fabric comes into play as well. Since fabric prices can get out rageous as well. Never really gone in for abstract art. Your Barn Quilt should of been up there with a pricey tag. I really liked and appreciated your work and effort alot more.

Thank you for sharing your photos. I enjoy going to shows and taking pictures to "relive" the moment and add some inspiration to my work.
Have you ever followed one particular quilter's work throughout the years? It is cold here this a.m. --- a minus eleven degrees F. with wind chill of minus thirty-seven degrees F. We were to have taken a bus to Houghton, Michigan to view the Michigan Tech University Ice Carnival statues. I will stay home and sew today!!!!

Few more...

ksusan-I agree with you about taking the photos to inspire me. I've always admired landscape quilts, but just have no idea how to go about starting one. Some day... In quilting there's always room to move and grow. I guess that's the beauty of it. :D

Aww Rebecca--thank you. You're so sweet. :-)

I'm drooling! What great photos. You captured the quilts perfectly, at least from my perspective. You can see all the quilting and embellishments. Some of those quilts, wow, the work and craftsmanship that went into them is incredible.

I'll add a few pictures from my guild's last quilt show. I cannot seem to find the folder with all the shots I took after hours, when no one was there. These are all close ups, mainly because there were soooooo many people going through I couldn't get pictures of the entire quilt. Thankfully I'm patient and still got some good shots, and it helped that there was a room specially set up for the men to retire to when they got tired of walking and needed a break.

I love the movement of color in this one.

Doris does amazing work! This entire quilt was done to showcase her hand applique.

This is all hand applique. The entire quilt was a large queen size.

I share your opinion, but I still enjoy the pictures. Going back through them, I love the one of the quilt that copies the picture of the bridge done in soft blues and purples. She did a great job.

Wow--Tiffany--those are amazing!! I just love all the colors on the one Doris did. The others are so much fun top look at--but not as much my style. (No barns. )

Karen--I agree with you. I took pictures to show what was there--but there were very few I loved. The section where the big quilts were had some wonderfully interesting pieces, but that's where we weren't allowed to take pictures. Your favorites are mine too!!

I took some very close ups too--I'll post a few here in case anyone is saying to herself "I'd love to see a close up of that one!"

Moonpi 02-10-2008 08:11 AM

I am just blown away by the beauty... Thank you both for sharing. It was a great treat.

sunflower 02-10-2008 08:27 AM

Many of the quilts are obviously designed from the quilters own imagination with the colours he or she likes. As for prices - when you figure the amount of time it takes to design the quilt, the (hours) spend finding just the right fabrics, preshrinking and cutting the fabrics and then sewing them all together ( and ripping out sometimes), and the skill it takes, the quilter is still probably making less than $5.00 an hour on them . Minimum wage is more than that now.

BDor 02-10-2008 01:48 PM

Enjoyed all the pictures. "Arty" quilts are not my thing but whatever appeals to you. I don't think any of them appeal to me $2,000 worth.

Tiffany, there are some talanted ladie in your guild! wonderful work.

Chele 02-10-2008 02:28 PM

Thanks for sharing. I really enjoyed the varied styles and designs of the art quilts. I love all quilts, but I think the art quilts require talent that most of us do not possess. Remember, the Great Masters weren't famous or appreciated in their time either.

Lois-nounoe 02-10-2008 04:37 PM

I like quilts for the reason most are made. To cuddle up with and keep snug and warm. But then I like fine art to look at too. I just would rather cuddle up with Barnbum's barns then Whistler's Mother anytime. :))

Love2Quilt 02-10-2008 04:39 PM

I am absolutley amazed by the one with the tree, It just jumps out at you. I am thinking she put the fabric on and then did alot of lead work on it like the bushy grass at the bottom

Thank you for sharing your pictures. I always love seeing pictures from quilt shows.

stay-at-home 02-10-2008 09:19 PM

thanks for posting those barnbum. i gotta say that i like the third one alot, the one with alot of orange. i bet it's handpainted fabric and thus the price. also are these people paying a commission to the space where they are exhibiting? this could account for the prices.

anyway, it's like going to the show to see all the pics. thanks much.

vicki reno 02-12-2008 06:58 AM

I thik the two I liked the best were the neighborhood and the tree.

ozarkgal 02-14-2008 05:42 AM

I like that one too.. it gives me a great idea for some inspiration for some famous houses here in St. John's. Old downtown area has many colourful row houses, and it would be neat to design something like that.
