Are there "standard" sizes for quilts?

Or is it "this is the size it is - now I'll find a place for it to be"?

Or- " I measured the mattress and how high it is from the floor and I'll go from there?"

The last top I made was for a king-size bed - (next time I will be much more specific in what I offer to do :? ) - that thing seemed about as big as a football field

I have never been happy with store bought comforters because they do not go down the sides enough for me. I like to cover the box spring. That is why I am making mine really big, to suit my own preference.

I like mine to cover the sheets on the sides - I skip the pillow tuck thing - and just have it go to the top end of the mattress - put the pillows on top -
I like it to hang over the bottom end about the same amount it hangs over the sides

So I know how to do the measurements - for me the trick is to get the design to work within those parameters.

I just laid it out on the bed and added as many more rows to the side as it needed. Minus the border sometimes two or 3 rows on each side depending on block size.

I found that most websites and people all had different opinions. In the end I found that the Warm and Natural or Warm and White quilt batting comes in precut sizes and I've decided to go with that. My advice would be to make the quilt about 1" smaller than the batting to take care of any stretching or warping of the batting and backing when you quilt as I have seen most places agree you should have a larger backing than quilt top when quilting.
