I'm having trouble finding the correct size for a quilt. The quilt patterns that are for queen beds are usually too small. When you add the dimensions of the matress top with a blanket on it and then add for the deep deep matresses, most queen quilts are way to small. I'm doing a frayed edge french roses quilt. It has to be washed and dried once or twice to get fuzzy edges and shrinks some. I guess, I just have to guess at how large to make it. Would rather have it large than small. King size seems to be a good queen size. What do others do?

If you're making a quilt for a particular bed, measure it and go from there.

My queen size quilt I made for my DS and DDIL's bed was 90 wide by 90 long, and it could have been 100 long. The width was excellent and they have the newer thick matress. As we do also, and it covered the entire matress and a little of the box spring.

I don't go by the sizes, I just keep going until it's big enough for the bed I'm making it for, depending how much of an overhang I want. LOL

This is exactly what I do also.

Sometimes if you have a pattern it's a bit difficult to enlarge. You can add just so many borders. Also, figuring out fabric can be difficult, especially now with fabric getting priced higher.

That's what I do also. Some mattresses are thicker than others.

When I have bought (gasp) comforters for our bed I ALWAYS buy a king size. It lays on the bed nicer and less chance of us fighting for the covers! If I were you I would just measure the bed to the spots I wanted the quilt to lay and then just make it according to the measurements!

I never follow directions for making quilts a certain size. My baby quilts are normally 48x60 and my lap quilts are normally 60x72 unless I am making it for my husband and then its a "king size" blanket!
