So much to think about when making a specific quilt.... thanks you for all your help.

Oh, by the way, SherriR, there is no such thing as a "dumb" question, on these boards. We are all learning. I wouldn't have known quilt sizes if I hadn't googled them. So please, please, please don't ever feel like any question you post is a "dumb" question. I'll bet there are a lot of people just dying to ask the same question!
Also, is your name really Sherri? Or is it Sherrill? Just wondering. I don't run into "Sherrill" very often, and it's my first name. |
In Fons & Porter Quilter's Complete Guide, their standard size are: (batting are noted to the right)
Twin 65" x 95" 72" x 90" Full 80" x 95" 81" x 96" Queen 86" x 100" 90" x 108" King 106" x 106" 120" x 120" |
I have a book - "The Quilter's Pocket Reference" that has sooo much useful information. I would highly recommend this for answering so many questions. Bought it about 10 years ago in my LQS for $8. Gives yardage equivalents; standard bed/batting sizes with sample quilt sizes; yardage and layout options for backing; calculations for all kinds of cuts; binding measurements; reduction/enlargement charts, etc. Great tool to take on shopping trips.

When I'm making a quilt that will be given away or one that is not for a specific bed, I look at the prepackaged batting sizes. The gives me a starting point.

That is great advice - I had considered the other points but this one hadn't occurred to me! Thanks Bearisgray!!!

Another factor to consider- do you put the pillows on top of the quilt? Do you put the quilt OVER your pillows? and if so, how much of a "tuck" do you want/need?

Don't think there is any regulation on quilt sizes and I copied my from a quilt magazine which says:
Twin 63" x 88" Full 78" x 90" Queen 84" x 92" King 100" x 108" Measure your bed and go from there, you decide the length and width you want. You can widen using wider borders/multiple borders. IdahoSandy |

When anyone asks me how big the quilt is going to be, I tell them that I won't know until it's done. lol Maybe that's why I have a store-bought comforter on my bed. (Those people apparently can follow the rules)
