Quilt Sizes
 

Is there a list of "standard" quilt sizes anywhere here on the board? I want to make a baby quilt, but just don't know what size is good. Is bigger better? What do the mothers prefer? It's been way too long since my girls were babies and don't have any quilts to measure. I would prefer that this quilt be a surprise, so don't want to ask my DD.

Thre are really no standards sizes Depends on the age of the baby and if you want something for newborns or one that the child will grown into. Usual to start is about 36"x45" and then 45" x60" for one a bit larger that fits most crib beds. I usually say " large enough to cover the kid" but not "too large for the bed"
Standard batting sizes can also control the size. Most packaged battings are 45"x60" but Warm Co makes on that is 32"x43" or so.

I like to make baby quilts that will last into toddler stage and beyond.
these are made about 50X60 inches. All the mothers have loved them.

I also make mine so that the child will have them at least to toddler stage.

This what I do to. My teenage grandchildren still use theirs on the sofa when they watch TV.

Make it whatever size you want. Mothers are instructed to not put anything in the crib with the baby now anyway.

Found this helpful list. It is categorized as "American" standard blanket sizes. A throw blanket would be somewhere between a crib and a twin, and a baby size blanket it typically 36" x 36" (ish). These guidelines are more helpful if you are making a blanket for a particular mattress size. I also like to make larger baby blankets because they last longer, although my niece's favorite is a 2' x 3' that she still brings on overnights (she is eight years old).

• Double: 80 by 90 inches
• Queen: 90 by 90 to 100 inches
• King: 108 by 90 to 100 inches
