Quilt Tops

What do you do with quilt tops that you don't want to finish? I have a couple that I just didn't care for after I was done. They may interest some to finish.

ontheriver 11-20-2011 07:07 AM

I put them away for awhile and work on something else. Then later I usually pull them out and finish them for gifts or charity. I find that someone always loves the ones I hate.

sammie 11-20-2011 07:08 AM

I would like to know too..... I have a couple that I just can't bring myself to quilt.... I'm not crazy about the colors or pattern

Mariposa 11-20-2011 07:09 AM

If you don't want to finish them, I'd be glad to have them to finish and donate them to charity. Just a thought~

KerryK 11-20-2011 07:14 AM

If push comes to shove, put them in a yard sale. Someone will be thrilled to scoop them up, I bet! For me, it would be counter-productive to keep them. They would always be nagging at the back of my mind, and I'd feel guilty for not finishing them. Get rid of them and you'll have peace of mind working on the ones you enjoy.

Needle Up 11-20-2011 07:23 AM

I just finished a quilt that is so ugly that I don't want to finish. I think I will donate it. Good idea.

mucky 11-20-2011 07:44 AM

Sometimes when you go ahead and finish them, it turns out you really like them. I rarely like a quilt luntil it's finished.

leatheflea 11-20-2011 08:37 AM

You could do an easy all over meander and donate to the homeless since winter is upon us. I'm sure if you dont want to do that someone here would be more than happy to do it for you.

Just Me... 11-20-2011 08:39 AM

I have donated them to the local senior center. They hand-quilt them, raffle them of and use the money to take trips.

mzzzquilts 11-20-2011 08:47 AM

I put one for sale here on the board that I'd finished but didn't really care for. The person who bought it LOVED it, and has kept me abreast of her progress in finishing it. Last I heard, it was ready for binding, I'm looking forward to seeing the final results! (And I got some spending cash to buy, of course....MORE fabric!)

Dolphyngyrl 11-20-2011 08:47 AM

why don't you try selling them here, someone else might like them if you don't, and you could use the money to buy more fabric

kjohnson 11-20-2011 08:50 AM

These are all great ideas. Does anyone know of a senior center in the Winston-Salem, NC area that would like them to quilt?

kjohnson 11-20-2011 08:51 AM

That's a good idea too. I wouldn't even begin to know what to charge for a top.

desertrose 11-20-2011 09:05 AM

If they don't appeal to you why not finish them and donate them to a charity organization.

crafty pat 11-20-2011 09:09 AM

I would find someone who likes it and give it to them.

ckcowl 11-20-2011 09:19 AM

i either donate them to a group who will happily finish them and use them- or the little sewing group i belong to makes sleeping bags for the homeless-i take them to the group-and they decide to use them for the sleeping bags-or to finish them up and give them to some other organization-usually either the hospice house-or one of the local fire departments that give them to families who have had home fires.

I agree. We all love quilts and would love to see your tops on sale here. Or you could put together some silly contest and one of us would WIN the lovely quilt top.

In the yellow pages, look under Senior Center. Try Googling Senior Center Winston-Salem NC.

Someone had posted a few months ago in the classifieds that they would take them and finish them for a charity. I can't remember who it was but maybe put a post in the classifieds to see if someone is interested in doing that. If I can remember who it was I'll let ya know. :)

teddysmom 11-20-2011 09:42 AM

i've got one stuffed in the back of the closet. Hope DH doesn't find it. He'll want me to finish it and I'm not ready for that yet. I'm not pleased with the way it looks. It's batik and I didn't realize that batik is extremely difficult to hand quilt. I've got it sandwiched but it's all wrinkly and I don't even like to look at it. Oh, well, someday.........

Jim 11-20-2011 09:45 AM

I go ahead and quilt them anyway..donated quilts are in need everywhere.
If you dont want to many quilters here are more than glad to accept them so they can quilt them and donate them

javin22 11-20-2011 09:47 AM

I made a king size quilt top and after I got it done, I hated it. The colors reminded me of my ex-husbands van. So I donated it to the church to finish for disaster victims.

luvstoquilt 11-20-2011 10:35 AM

Try to sell them here or on ebay or donate them but don't keep them.

IdahoSandy 11-20-2011 10:45 AM

You can also give them to Goodwill or quilting groups would take and finish them.

luana 11-20-2011 10:57 AM

First of all, I appreciate knowing the someone else has tops that they don't want to finish. Makes me feel more "normal". And now I have all these great ideas about how to get them out of storage. Thanks

kjohnson 11-20-2011 06:38 PM

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

Quiltaddict 11-20-2011 06:58 PM

Donate them. Many quilt guilds have members that would happily finish them to give to a charity.

Mona Marie 11-21-2011 06:21 AM

donate to a thrift shop. Someone will take it.

maddecker 11-21-2011 08:23 AM

My chapter has a bring ufo night when we put a project on the table that we don't want to finish and in exchange we choose something to finish that someone else threw in. You'll be surprised at how many people like what you hate

CanoePam 11-21-2011 12:12 PM

I recently finished a top that I really didn't like. I put it away for a while, but eventually ended up buying a backing that I really liked and then just doing a simple meander. I use it as a lap quilt in the family room, keeping that nice backing side up! Alternately the idea of finishing it and donating is a great one too.

Pam
