I want to make a light weight summer quilt. Was planning on making a rag quilt with only the backing and squares...has anyone ever done this? Will it work. Its 98 degrees here...HOT!

Don't know why you couldn't

Yes, it works fine with just the two pieces of fabric.

I wanted to do a "summer lightweight quilt" as well, and another more experienced quilter than I am suggested I use 100% bleached or unbleached muslin for the batting. Because it's all cotton, and my top and bottom would be all cotton, the quilt would still 'breathe', and the muslin would add very little weight. But like the others, I don't see why you couldn't just put the two layers together. This was just a suggestion.

Sure it would work.

I took a class with Deidre McElroy in Hershey a few years ago. She spoke about a Tahitian quilt called a tifaifai, which is a quilted top and a backing with no batting- because it is so warm in Tahiti. I have always wanted to make one.

It works, I've done it.

I've made baby quilts with out batting and they were light weight and very practical.

I make them and call them summer quilts. I use them when I just need a little something to cover with in the eve. when sitting on the porch. Grandkids love laying on them after the pool.

that's how they used to do it thee olden days...I have 5 or 6 quilt my grandma made when she was growing up on a farm and none of her's have batting. They're great for the summertime because they're so light and airy!

Here are 2 I made. I just did SITD to hold the layers together.

I used up all my scraps on them.

I have also used flannel on the back with no batting & this works out real well & they wash up good too.

I have done two rag quilts with no batting. They have been well loved :)

It may not be as thickly frayed with two layers, but it will work just fine :D:D:D
