Do any of you do the Cotton Theory quilt as you go method quilts by Betty Cotton? If so do you like it?

One of my LQS had a demo. and a 15% discount on the books etc. I loved the demo, bought everything I needed because of course I was getting a discount and no shipping/handling etc...and there it sits waiting for me to get around to trying it. I will be interested to hear what others think.

I made a tote using the Cotton Theory....actually took a class to learn how to do it. The class was wonderful as I left with the tote done! Now, would I use that method again or with a quilt....probably not. I can't imagine how heavy a quilt would be using this method as the tote is even heavy. It was fun and I would recommend making a tote first to just learn the technique, but like I said, it's not a technique I would use over and over again.

I hav emade five bed size quilts using the Cotton Theory method. I like it.

I wasn't to crazy about it but I have friends that love it.

I made an appliqued block quilt with it and it was fine. Have to be careful of shifting with all the bulk. I think I used cotton batting and if did it again I would use poly batts.

I just took a class at the Wisconsin Quilt Expo and we made a wall hanging. I enjoyed it and I am sure that I will do it again.

I bought the book and tried it but did not care for it myself. The book is just setting on the shelf I'm too busy to give it another try.

I made a quilt. My sewing leaves a lot to be desired but I enjoyed the process. Here's a link to the picture...

I have made placemats and a tote using this method. I liked the results but have not made anything larger.

Tried it once and REALLY wanted to like this method. Ended up throwing out everything I'd cut for the project. I swore never again. Though I know some who do like the method. Just wasn't me.

I made a quilt and it was so stiff that it could stand by itself. Lots of thread, fabric, etc. The only reason I finished it was because I loved the fabric and paid full price for it. After it was finished I could barely recognize the fabric. I washed it over and over with fabric softener to soften it up. No luck.

did not care for it...

I bought a pattern years ago, saw Betty do the demo, everyone was going crazy buying patterns and the special batting and fabric panels. It looked like fun, but, I can't figure it out. Don't think I will ever do it now.

cotton theory of quilting as you go

Hi Peggy. I am studying various "quilt as you go" methods. I never personally tried the cotton method, but I belong to a sewing group where several of the women used it and do not like it.

I read a little about it, and the women in my sewing group said you end up with lots of thicknesses where you join the blocks together.

I am not going to use this method. I am going to other methods.

Hope this helps!

I've made a few cotton theory quilts over the years- the quilts are beautiful quilts- when that is the kind of quilt I want to make I do. the technique is a good technique to know how to do- I like to try new techniques/methods to make quilts- some I use over & over- some I learn once- then never do it again- the cotton theory technique I've used numerous times since the first class I took for it 8 years ago.

I did some smaller project way back when - I enjoyed it.

I made a reversal table topper - I really didn't like the results. I probably won't do it again.
I think I will package everything up and give it to my guild.

I haven't made any quilts with the "Cotton" theory but I have made a few quilt as you go, initially they are a little easier but as you attach rows to rows, it's not easy, and unfortunately most of my quilts are oversized kings.

I have a pamphlet/pattern with that method - haven't done it as I heard the quilts did not drape well. I like the looks of it though.

I did a large quilt using the Cotton Theory, I really like the colors I used, it is stiffer than I like, has not been washed. It was fairly good to work with until I was at the last rows, then it was a bit of work as it wanted to pull and slide. Would I do another, I do not think so. Pretty though with the folded edges. Just my two cents worth.
