I have use this method a few times; and no, you do not have to use sashing between the blocks. It does break down a larger quilt into a smaller more manageable piece. It does not save you on time or work in my opinion.

I only do QAYG I love it. I have done many different types w/ sashing, w/o sashing, on point, borders, QAYG where you are quilting and piecing all at the same time, fleece backing, pieced backing (as in a back that could be a front not just one fabric). I have used many other peoples methods and made up a few of my own.

I don't do much fmq mostly just walking foot straight or slightly curved lines, b/c I am horrible at fmq.

My one rule w/ QAYG is no hand sewing. I love to hand sew where it makes a difference like fussy cut EPP, but mindless sewing binding type seams is just not for me.
