"Quilt As You Go"

Would some of the members here that do this on a regular basis have some recommendations on the best "basic" book for starting with. Thanks.

Don't know of a book but have youtube has some excellent videos.

Marti Michell "Quilting in Sections" is good because she covers several QAYG techniques.

Sharon Pederson's "Reversible Quilts" has quilt patterns, but covers just one technique:

Any of Georgia Bonesteel's lap quilting books explain a technique geared towards handquilting.

I just quilted a whole quilt using the method from this video. It was the easiest I ever tried. My quilt had sashing and borders. The sashing i added as rows. The borders I added at the end as I quilted.

Use the search feature on this board. I made one using a technique by one of our
members - there may be more on there, but this one worked for me.

That's the one that I use. Never had a problem and its easy. Good pictures, too.

I only make my quilts by the QAYG method. The links given above are all great. I think it depends, too if want to do any hand sewing. I don't because of the arthritis is my hands and wrists. I mostly use the method on the Quilting Edge. No hand sewing. But you will have sashings.

Thanks for the replies. I think that the site that STICHNRIPPER refers to is what I'll try.

If you like quilts with blocks it is an easy way to put quilting or applique on. They are easy to handle, my picture was done that way. The block is reverse applique stitched by hand then machine quilted around . Because didn't like my hand stitching looked naked I fancy stitched each. It was so easy todo , no heavy quilt to work with until all were joined and quilted the joining pieces.

there are books but can't remember the titles google a search.

Georgia Bonesteel's books are the best for this method. She calls it Lap Quilting.

Don't forget to show us a picture!

I'm going to try this method of joining the blocks and rows. Eliminates having to iron 1/4" down in the sashing!

Fun and Done pattern by prairie sky quilting. Is an easy start. I recently found a book at Goodwill called Machine Quilting in Sections by Marti Mitchell. I am going to try it to put my Seasonal Silhouettes quilt together

No hand sewing or sashing requited. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pL36s08wg4

To my knowledge, Georgia Bonesteel was the first quilter to come up with the QAUG method of quilting, so any of her books would be great.

I was looking for how to join blocks without sashing and found this video

Thanks for the video tutorials. I purchased a number of sample quilt blocks from Longaberger some years ago and wanted to put them into a quilt. All I needed to know was the best way to attach them.

.....another project just landed on my toDo list.

You tube has some terrific videos.

There are two messages going on right now about QAYG.

I used a Youtube tutorial from "The Gourmet Quilter". It was the simplest I've seen and she is a good teacher. I make my quilts this way so I can quilt it one block at a time. It is a great way to learn free motion quilting--no bulk. Suzanne

I've watched many, haven't really tried yet, but am now working on a skill builder by pile o fabric and I am going to use the gourmet quilter
way...looks the neatest to me....JMHO

My last two quilts were halfway decent with QAYG.

I have too much trouble putting the sammich together on the entire quilt and too hard to rassle with them on my DSM so until I did QAYG mine were kind of messy. Hard to be enthused if they don't turn out well.

I decided to try QAYG and poked around forums, looked at videos and whatnot and finally took the plunge and just went all Nike on that stuff!

What I did was after I quilted and squared all the blocks up I put blocks together to make rows then put rows together.

I sewed the back together first, right sides together, pinned in place and pinning the front out of the way. I used 1/4 SA.

Then I flipped it over after removing pins and folded one side over onto the other side by 1/4 and stitched it down.

Not perfect, but hey that's what decorative stitching is for.

I did it this way because I was too chicken to do sashing.

I'll have to get over that though.
