Does any one know how to quilt as you go. I would really like to learn how to do this. The easiest way possible please.

I'm going to make Ditter's string quilt soon with all my hoarded fat quarters.

Ann L 09-30-2010 05:19 PM

what is a ditter's string quilt?

Ann L 09-30-2010 05:21 PM

I went and looked. Looks like fun. Do you know if you can make it larger than a twin? I would think it would only be a matter of adding more blocks. Thanks.

I did mine making my own template the main thing is to center the batting in the middle and them you can make it as big as you want.
do a search at the top for fun and done

I agree. That isn't really the 'quilt as you go' I have seen. It's still neat and cute though. And I've done it with some wall hangings I made a long time ago.

You can use "quilt as you go" for any quilt that you have the backing and the batting together and then sew the top right onto that sandwich.
Most are done so that you place two pieces of fabric, right sides together onto the batting/backing sandwich and sew a seam down one side. Then flip the top piece over and finger press. Place the next piece on top of that, face down and sew it down the same way. Flip it over and finger press.
This can be quite beautiful by using strips, or triangles or just random"crazy quilt" pieces. Once you have the whole top filled in, you just have to bind the edges because the quilting is all done.

I think most people think of quilt as you go as block by block-in other words you make a block, quilt it, and then make another, quilt it, etc. Then you somehow assemble the quilted blocks together into a large quilt. Personally I don't have much trouble machine quilting a small wall hanging or baby size quilt. My issue is with a twin, queen, etc and I want to make them in sections or quilt individual blocks before I assemble.

Check Missouri Star Quilt Company website. They have a new tutorial about quilting as you go. Great web site for other things too. Enjoy!

LOL. Someone already posted the link to the Missouri Star tutorial. Unless they have more than one. Someone on youtube left info for these videos in a comment (these links are in order of the videos from 1 to 4)
