Quilt as you Go: What width do you cut for the front & back sash strips?

I would like to try the Qayg method of joining blocks using the front and back sashing strips.

I am worried that the front sashing strip will cover the points when it is folded over. Has anyone had issues with this when doing the qayg method?

I’ve watched so YouTube videos that show very narrow strips for the sashing. I’m sorry that I can’t recall the names right now. One was a quilted from either Australia or New Zealand & she had detailed descriptions & closeups of what she did. I bought a Craftsy class with Marti Michel & I think her front strips are about 1/4” wider than her back ones. Both are very narrow & she folds them over & presses them before sewing them to the blocks. I don’t think she’s shown a block with points using this method. If your strips are narrow, it seems to me you wouldn’t lose points any more than with regular sashing methods.

I did several this way. I cut the front strips 1" wide and I quilted each block individually. When you join the blocks using a 1" strip and 1/4" seam, the raw edges of the blocks butt together with no gap. I think I cut the back strips 1 5/8", and then folded them in half.

Make a couple practice pieces first.

I use 1" for the backs and 1 3/4" for the fronts. Have you seen my tutorial?

some quilters do not use sashings on the front. you might look into that.

Thank you so much for the reminder. I haven't tried this, but I like it a lot!

If you use 1” strips, you cover no more than your normal seam allowance. So no more points get cut off than would otherwise. In my case, that means some.

I used your tutorial on my recent quilt, and it was wonderfully easy to follow. I cannot post the photos for some reason though. I will use this method again. Thanks
