I am thinking that they are like the pieces that you see at the end of the bed in hotels. Especially in the hotels that have eliminated bedspreads and use fancy sheets and have the blanket wrapped in between. So much cleaner! Anyway, is this what everyone else thinks a bed topper is? Or is it the piece some are making to lay over the pillows. I am thinking that they are calling those pillow covers. Now, I am not sure. Hmmmmm......

They are like large table runners, only for a bed. It allows you to make a pretty quilted accent for your bed without the commitment to making the larger bed-size quilt. Many display them across the foot of the bed as an accent to an existing quilt or bedspread or if you have a plain spread, the topper can be the focus.

I have several ideas in mind for making one for our bed. It would probably be an accent on top of the duvet I currently have on there.

Here are some examples:

Those are also called bed runners-like a table runner. Sometimes a topper is a square running in the area of 56 inches or so. I have seen many patterns in magazines called toppers about that size. I have made a few. They look really nice on a solid bedspread, as they don't cover the full bed, or hang down the sides.

I watched a segment on 'America Sews' with a guest from Crooked Nickel designs who showed how to make one of these. They are quite beautiful and easy! I actually purchased one of the patterns for one.

Nancy's Notions also has a new pattern for these, also very pretty.

I love this board, A Bed topper is exactly what I need , and will start one as soon as I finish the stuff I have purchased fabric for, Just what my bedroom needed for a plain color duvet. Rita

All the above correct...and to make a fast simple "quilt as you go...the middle one is jelly roll...just put down your fabric backing, batting and then start at the top with your first strip and cont. down...WA LA add binding and you have your Bed runner.

That's been my plan, too. No caths but it would be easier to wash a topper in my machine at home than to take the quilt to a laundromat for an oversized machine. Just haven't done it yet. :)
