Rather than practicing on clear vinyl, I would get some Press 'n Seal, lay it on your fabric, draw your design on that, then quilt and then tear off the Press 'n Seal.

As mentioned it can be used to "audition" a design....it is also used by some who do intensive appliqué.....draw full design on the vinyl use as an overlay on background fabric when placing pieces.....I buy the lite weight from a roll at JoAnn fab....I also use on dining room table atop "good" table clothes when having family over.....

What a great idea!! I'm going to try that on my next quilt.

Golden Threads makes a Preview Paper. It is a vinyl that you can use your erasable pens on and then preview your quilt. It has a thick black border on the sides so you don't write on your quilt.

Thanks for all the information and suggestions. Quilters Vinyl was suggested in the Doodle Quilting book by Cheryl Malkowski. She suggests using it to practice doodling to get comfortable free motion quilting BEFORE getting to your real quilt. I like the suggestion of putting it over your actual quilt to audition different designs. I always get stuck on what to quilt on my quilts.. Bet I am not alone! Thanks again for all your help.. I can always count on this board to come up with answers and suggestions..... off to doodle...................

regular clear vinyl will work you can put tape on the edges lay it on your area to be quilted and see if you like the design if not wipe it clean and do another design
