Quilting for appliqué motifs
 

I have the top of this appliquéd top done and I will hand quilt it with a cross hatch pattern in most of the quilt except the areas inside the arcs in the border. There I will put a feather type quilting pattern. The blocks are 10 inches inside of the 8 inch border and the finished size is 56 x 56 inches. My question is should I outline quilt the appliquéd objects in addition to the cross hatching quilting?

Here is a picture of my quilt. You can see where I've started on one block. It would just be a lot of hand quilting outlining every object. I guess it's only time....sometimes I get impatient. Just wondering if I need to outline the objects. I think it looks so good because it makes the objects "pop" and puffy. I'm using wool batting. It is called "Hope Blooms" by Acorn Quilt and Gift Company.

"sometimes I get impatient" - that's hilarious since you have the patience to do an applique quilt ,hand quilt it! :)
I don't have enough experience to give you any suggestions but I think it's beautiful, no matter what you choose to do and the block with the diagonal lines looks great so far!

From my personal perspective, yes you should take the time to ditch quilt the applique. IOW, quilt around each appliqued piece right along the edge. I feel this helps the applique to pop and in the long run really won't add that much time to quilting it. You can do it as you hand quilt the cross hatch background, using the edge of the applique as a travelling area to get to your next line of cross hatching (as opposed to travelling the needle and thread in the batting layer). You have already invested a great deal of time, effort and fabric creating this gorgeous top, why cut corners now? Also if you plan on entering this beauty in a judged show, it will score higher points if each applique element is ditched.

I agree, the cross hatching is plenty to do. echo quilting not required in this case. looks absolutely lovely!!!

I agree with Feline, you have put so much time in this quilt anyhow, whats a few more hours. When I hand quilt, I outline all applique. IMHO it just adds to the quilt. I usually completely hand quilt my whole quilt, then I do needle turn applique on top of the quilting.

Also, my cross hatching is 1” apart. Forgot to mention that previously.

I suggest you quilt around each piece of applique at the edge and catch the edge of the applique fabric to the back ground fabric. Then you will know each piece of applique will look as beautiful as it did before you began quilting. You have a beautiful quilt. It will be worth the extra stitches.
