Bow Tucks definitely need to have their own category, so I can ignor it.

I also don't appreciate opening something in Main and finding some stupid joke! If we would be considerate to post in the right place, there would be a lot less grumping around here. |

Patrice, I personally think you OWE us that extra half hour to total a full 24 hours per day...you mods and admins don't need lives...you have US!! ;) I look at it like SPAM emails...don't have a delete button here, but I have an "Ignore" buzz in my brain...if I don't think it's going to be something that I'm gonna be interested in, I don't click. It's the nature of the beast. Different strokes for different folks and all that. Try telling me that my vintage machines are not quilting related, and I'll tell you to stuff it...I piece and quilt on them, they fasinate me, and I consider them to be "quilty". Bow tucks bags are QUILTED. Go to any quilt show and find out how many jackets and quilted items there are OTHER than quilts. Do they not belong there? Guess my point is, if you don't think you're interested in the topic, don't click the link. If you can't figure out what the topic's about, don't click the link...that way you're not annoyed by something you're not interested in, even tho others will be interested and willing to discuss it. ~stepping down off my soapbox~ Ready to play nice now... ;) |

I simply read what I am interested in depending on the titles and how much energy I have that day. Personally I like the variety since this board is the only contact I have with people who quilt or people in general especially now that I had to leave GA. To me its sort of like the old quilting bees you read about or one of Jennifer Chiaverini's books. A little bit of everything since that's what most of us are. Multidimensional.
I am not really interested in babies except the 4 legged kind But others are proud of their children, GC or GGC and they need to share. I just took a break from quilting to paint the bathroom. No rest easy I am not going to put up pictures. LOL . But I love seeing others sewing rooms. And I took a break from quilting to make me some dresses for the summer. One in particular I am going to be proud of if it comes out the way I envision. No pattern for the additions just for the main dress. everyone is entitled to their own opinion Lucky us! |
i agree that the board goes way beyond quilting and the old admin was really good about keeping things cleaned up around here but there's new people here so what can you do.
i have filtered the sections that appear (i don't even get the chit chat section or the personal section) and there were created because people where talking about so much aside from quilting so he made sections just for that stuff. even the picture section is getting out of control we see pics of what people buy at the show, the store, the yard sale, etc. i'd much rather see something you've made with the stuff and not just your stuff - i just don't get it. |
I too can pretty much tell by the title if I want to pull it up and read...

I always try to look at all the pictures. When time allows I go through and read what interest me. Sometimes I leave comments, opinions or not. If something doesn't interest me I just go on. I enjoy seeing other's work, quilts or not.
|
It's not just a quilting forum, it's a gathering place for friends. Boy...I would consider my friends pretty darn boring if ALL they ever talked about was the same topic all day, every day. I mean, I love quilting, but I enjoy sharing and conversing with my friends too. I love hearing about weddings, seeing babies, hearing about what is going on in my friends lives. You wanna bet that when my Little Girl arrives in a little over four weeks, I am going to subject you guys to pictures! I don't know you guys, but when I am happy, excited or sad, sharing with you all on the board comes as naturally as calling my Mom.
|
I love this board because there are so many people posting on here: I've been part of some really interesting discussions and have learned a lot from others who are so generous with their expertise. When I log on, I tend to scan the first 3 pages of the Main section, look at whatever interests me and ignore the rest. I didn't even realise that there IS a lot of non-quilting stuff! I'm really grateful to the moderators who keep it all happening, and I also appreciate the good manners and respect for each other that are shown on this board.
The one thing I'd say is that it would be useful if the subject line always indicated what the subject of the post is - eg "Help - binding problem!" rather than "I need help!". |
I like it the way it is, I ignore the sections I don't want to read. I don't get out much so this is my socializing for the day.
I agree with the title lines. I also wonder why some posts get deleted, maybe they could just be locked with an explanation of why?? |

ok ... time for a review. pay attention. there will be a pop quiz.
1. This is a quilting board. It has always been a quilting board. it will always be a quilting board. 2. However, quilters are by and large very sociable sweetie-pies. So, conversations naturally drift into other areas from time to time. We have become friends and family because of that. A very good thing. :-) But we are still a quilting board. It's our primary reason for being. 3. Extra sections that don't relate to quilting were added to accommodate our desire to share other things with each other. 4. Adding more sections will not solve the problem of misplaced posts. It would only offer a wider variety of wrong places to put things. 5. We can encourage each other to be more descriptive in our titles and more careful where we put things. (as long as we do it politely. ;-) ) A few of the comments posted in this topic have stuck a toe or two into the snarky pool. tsk tsk tsk let's all be careful to avoid any more of that, please. For the most part, though, i would not classify this as a rant, rave, vent, steam, or otherwise poisonous post. Let's face it. Until somebody invents a magic pill we can all afford, we shall all remain imperfect. we're going to make mistakes. it is not the end of the world. SQUIRREL!!! |

let's all be careful to avoid any more of that, please. I love this board! My DH isn't too thrilled (poor abused baby) because of all the new stash I have accumulated but he has really liked my new experiments I wouldn't have tried without your encouragement. Reading is a privilege to me...wish everyone knew how. Again...I love this board! |
I think you can voice your opinion and still be welcomed. With the large number of people on here varied subjects are bound to come up. Hence, that may be one of the reasons for the huge growth.
The basic premise of quilting is still the main subject. As with any main subject whether in person conversation or on a message board other variables (subjects) will be introduced. I personally enjoy the thought of coming to this wonderful forum to gain knowledge of different subjects without having to cruise all over the inernet. Especially early in the morning with my cup of coffee and still wearing my pajamas!! |

Well said Patrice!
Now girls let's all mind and do as patrice says |
I love the board....I have never tried to read everything, my life doesn't give me the time to do so...I get on in the morning with my coffee and once in the afternoon...I read the recent topics that seem to interest me, and usually find one posting that makes me laugh...thank you to all the wonderful people on the board that make me laugh, show me how to make a rug, comment on the beautiful quilts, and post silly pictures....I have grown attached to all of you :)
|
I am enjoying reading items in all categories. I go through and pick and choose what I like. Viva diversity.

I hope I was not one of the snarky comments, I truly did not mean it to be. Sometimes things typed come across different. So if I have offended (especially moderators who do a great amount of work) I am sorry. I was just pointing out the differences I have seen in other boards and here. But as I said I am thankful for this place and love it here all topics included lol |
I have to agree.....I like the diversity

I love getting new ideas, and as long as we are all mindful of where we're posting it's easy enough to skip over things that don't interest me...for the moment.
I'd never heard of a Bow Tucks bag until I saw one here, and I ended up making several variations on them as gifts. I practiced a LOT of quilting skills on those bags! I also never thought about how embroidery could enhance my quilts; it isn't something I'm up to today, but it's an idea that will stay with me. Not for everyone, but reading about other arts and techniques has been very educational for me. |

I appreciate so much all the posts but particularily the quilting ones because I've learned so much in the short time I've been a member. From the non-quilting posts, I've gotten to know a few of you, and I think that builds comaradeire. We'll probably never meet face to face but I feel like I have friends here who are glad to hear from me, what I'm working on and some of things that are going on in my life. Chris

I, like many others do not have the time to read everything and just click on titles or photos that, from the title, seem of interest to me. I think it is great to have variety, sometimes seeing something different leads us into a new direction and a new 'style'
I am not really into 'traditional' patterns, but I know, because I have seen them on here, that these can be made more modern with different choices of fabric and a few twists and turns and I love that. At this point in my life I do not have much interest in making a bag but who knows what is around the corner and how my interest will change in the future. At least on this board I have the choice of looking at a multitude of ideas, inspiring work and creativity. I love every part of it and thank you all for taking the time to post anything and everything! |

I joined this message board back in April 2009, when admittedly there were fewer of us here. Back then, it seemed nearly all the messages were quilting related. I've always tried to read each and every post daily in both the Main and Pictures sections. And tried to make appropriate comments, including assistance and encouragement. Lately, I feel we've gotten away from this being a Quilter's Message Board. There seem to be too many posts with general sewing (Bow Tucks bags and clothing) and other hobbies (Antique sewing machine repair and needlepoint). I am finding it increasingly difficult to read all the posts now and am less inclined to do so, as I have no interest in these other activites. If I did, I would join a message board for those activities. I sincerely feel, we need to get back to this message board's original purpose of quilting and eliminate many of the non-quilting related posts. Strictly Quilting General Sewing Sewing Projects Equipment and Notions What do you think? |
Patrice? If I pass the pop quiz can I go to the head of the class? I've never been to the head of the class before. I think I might like it there...maybe... ;) :)
I will apologize for my "stuff it" comment. My mama would have been appalled! For the way I worded that, I'm sorry. I will, however, maintain that my vintage machines are quilty...as much so as a Gammill! The nice thing about being an adult is that two people can disagree and still be friends....it's ok to do that. ;) (I still tell my kids this...have one daughter in law that hasn't grasped the concept yet, she's only 47 tho, think there's still time?) |
I just go to Unread topics and read the ones that interest me.
|
I love this board....quilting, pics, jokes....all of it. The quilters here are the best! I have learned so much just by reading others' questions. And best of all.....you don't laugh at my silly looking quilts....lol.
|
wow- I did not know that there were 250,000 members! I like the variety, but I pick and choose which posts I read. I have not been a member all that long though.
