quilting borders

I am about to quilt a wall hanging that has a 1 inch border and was wondering to I have to put quilting on that border? Of course I know it's my quilt and I can do what I want but just wondered what others thought.

Thanks.

i recently did a sashiko mini with a small border... didn't quilt it and it really puffed out like a padded picture frame. i liked that look.

Your batting will dictate how densely you need to quilt. I would think you could easily skip quilting a 1" border if that is your choice.

Just looking at the two wall-hangings I have up and they both have approximately 1 inch inner border that I didn't quilt and I think they look fine that way. They haven't lost their shape or anything. They are not the type of item that
will need to be washed, maybe vacuumed every now and then, so standing up to a washing machine shouldn't be a concern for me.

Thanks everyone, I am going to skip the quilting and see what I think.

I would not quilt the 1" unless the rest of it is heavily quilted. If anything, I would consider a 1/4" straight stitch along the edge.

The rule I learned is that the density of quilting in the border should be halfway between the most densely quilted part of your top & the least densely quilted part. So, like Martina wrote: unless the rest of your quilt is quilted with 1/2" or closer quilting, you should be fine leaving it unquilted (assuming you SID at edge of border).

Of course, the fun thing about rules is that sometimes they are best when broken.

One little inch can be passed by, I would think. I use Warm and Natural batting and it does not have to be quilted less than ten inches apart.

I've been experimenting with my decorative stitches on my machine, and if you think it may need that extra something, try one in a fun color thread. It just may give it that extra touch.

As you said, its your quilt. 1 inch borders can be difficult if doing it on a quilt frame but its doable. I like to quilt every inch of my quilts 1 inch and above so I'd probably do it for myself.
