I struggle with that as well... and I do want to support the local shop. I sometimes bring some but mostly I buy from the shop..... makes me feel awkward
|
At my LQS, the price of the class goes straight to the teachers. The quilt shop is providing the space free of charge. I buy what I can there, but the LQS doesn't always have what I want.
|
Usually the classes I take are at the same shop I buy from anyway. If a new shop I will buy something.
|
My LQS gives a discount on fabrics bought for a class they're having.

I did see on a LQS's website that they requested that you buy your fabrics from them which I considered a bit pushy because their classes are fairly pricey. When you pay to take a class, I feel you should be able to use whatever fabrics you want.

I liked to support my local LQS. If I took a class or used their facility, I paid for it by buying something I wanted to own, fabric, tools, notions etc. The last two LQS have closed in my area, and now I can only shop on line. It can happen.......

I haven't taken a class at a quilt shop in a long time, but when I did I had no problem bringing my own fabric. I usually looked around while at the shop to see if there was something there that I wanted/needed, but I didn't feel obligated to buy. Sometimes the LQS gives a discount if you do purchase your supplies there. I think that's good business.

I think if I were taking a class, I might feel obligated to buy something there. As Sheri.a said, the instructor gets the money for the class.....or probably the biggest part of it, and the shop owner provides the space, probably in hopes the pupils will buy enough to pay for the electricity and such.
I haven't ever taken a class. I wouldn't know how to act in one, lol. But really, I think I might be impatient if the instructor droned on and on. Or get frustrated if she went too fast. |
Thanks for all your comments.
I will be buying some things for the class at the shop, so that will be supporting the LQS that is offering the class, but I will bring my own fabric and batting. Watson |
Where I teach, we don't care. And when the other LQS has classes, their students come and get there fabric at our shop. We're all friends.
