quilting design

What quilting design do you use on Sunbonnet Sue? I have looked at several pictures on the internet, but cannot determine how they are quilted. (I will be machine quilting on a domestic machine.)

Friends who have made these quilts used various ways of applique depending on their own preference.

there are as many answers to this as there are people who make 'sunbonnet sue' quilts- some people echo quilt around the appliques- then fill with a stipple; some people cross-hatch between their appliques, across the quilts; some echo then cross-hatch; some do a pattern-like feathers or a meandering with flowers, butterflies in the negative space around their appliques- there are as many choices as there are quilts. to 'try' different patterns to help you decide what YOU like you could use some 'Press & Seal' plastic- (or template plastic-anything you can draw on that's clear) draw a design you are considering onto it, lay it across the quilts & see if you like it- if not, try something else. or take a picture of the quilt, print it onto paper, making a few copies- then you can draw on them to *test* different patterns to see what you like

You can quilt it as desired. I took this picture at MQX West in 2011. I think the quilting is amazing, and really sets off the excellent piecing and applique.

Wow, Dunster, that is a beauty. About the best to my eye, I have seen.

Oh wow, I love the feathers circling the Sues.

I think McTavishing looks great around appliques. As do many many filler designs. Mostly, for me, I like to quilt heavily around the applique. But I don't make bed quilts.

I did a small stipple around my SBS sample. The above is about as good as it gets as far as quilting SBS.WOW! Echo quilting or simple cross hatching would be very traditional.

here is my humble attempt:
