Hi all, can you tell me if the darning foot is what's needed for free embroidery, i've found a couple on ebay but they don't say what machine they are for, so are they all universal fittings, or do i need to get one for my particular model.
Thanks for any help.

It depends on your machine as to the model. My Pfaff has to be a Pfaff darning foot. The same foot fits my Brother and Viking. Depending on your machine there are probably a couple of diffrent feet you can use.

feet are sized for low shank or high shank. So you kneed to know which one. Most machines also have an extension that adapt various feet.

However, I believe it is always best to get the one specifically for your machine. Better chance that it will work properly. This is especially true for walking foot as well. My experience in teaching a lot of classes that the generics don't always work satisfactorily. and the extra cost is worth the $$

some machines have interchangeable feet others do not, you would need to ask if it will work on your particular machine, there are low (or short) shank feet and long shank feet...different machines use different ones. i've seen a darning foot (hopping foot) used for free-motion quilting but i've always used the foot specified by the machine manual for any decorative stitching...and a walking foot for straight lines.
