Ouch!
|
OMG I'm sooo sorry that happened to you!! When I cut mine I only it fainted lol I know it hurts so bad. I hope it heals really fast :)
|
Oh wow, sorry to hear about your thumb, but hope you have a speedy recovery. I wondered why I hadn't heard from you in awhile, but sounds like you managed the all important thing by heading to the kitchen & didn't bleed on the fabric :-) - just kidding. Maybe this'll get you out of cleanup on Thanksgiving. :-D Have a great holiday.

Hey Betty,
Pretty stupid, huh?? Well, I learned my lesson. I've been trying to get ahold of you through a pm, I keep getting the messege that your name is not found in the records. I am using the right name arn't I, Betty K? Stephanie |
I think that's me. I get my daily quilt board msgs. Sounds like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. :)
|
Hope you mend quickly. Hugs being sent your way.

Many times I've come very close to my fingers with my rotary cutter--nowadays when I cut I check where my fingers are before I move the cutter.
My cousin Anne cut off the first joint of her right index finger as a teenager when she got it trapped in mixer beaters just for a second when she was making cookies! Ow! Dana |
Sorry to hear about your accident... a little Thanksgiving turkey should help the healing process though! We have to be careful with those rotary cutters!!
|
Sorry to hear this, BUT it is a REMINDER to us all. Rotary Cutters are NOT TOYS..... Hope the healing process goes well.

Be Careful using Neosporin. When I cut my leg last May, it was recommended I use Neosporin. After use of about a week, the wound became more inflamed than at the beginning. Still they recommended Neosporin. Used for about another 2 weeks. Wound worse. Took tests. Results: Allergic to Neosporin. It caused a deep burn which is still healing. If your wound gets redder and redder, it is not inflamation from the cut, it is a burn from Neosporin.

We did this with my granddaughter when she fell off her bike and had stitches in her face. As a matter of fact we put the neosporin on from the getgo and she does not have any trace of scarring. |
I don't like rotary cutters. They are very dangerous. KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN!
|
It seems we have all had an accident with a rotary cutter, and usually from not sharp enough. I will for sure, change the blade when I get back home this time. I , too am always tempted to just push a little harder. Mine got so bade last time it was like making dot to dot that I then used the scissors to cut apart. Maybe that would be a good idea to create a blade that did that on purpose, so we could take the fabric with us on a trip and do the cutting with scissors while traveling. Hmmm, maybe that's not a good idea either. Oh well.

I did the same thing to my finger. It literally bleed for days. I now have suction cup handles on my rulers. It keeps my fingers way away from the rotary cutter. It also helps keep the ruler from slipping. I got mine from Harbor Freight. They are used to suction to glass to pick them up. Try it, you will never cut without them.

If my DH knew how dangerous a rotary cutter can be, I'd be back to cutting out my fabrics with scissors. Thankfully, I haven't had an accident with it yet (knock on wood), but I've cut myself a couple times with a pocket knife and with a piece of metal flashing. Funny enough, I don't have kitchen knife accidents, but did cut the very tip of my middle finger off with a mandoline slicer, The area grew back, but doesn't have any color.

Didn't your mama tell you not to play with sharp things. That makes me cringe just reading about it. Hope you get better soon. Glad you got friend to take you to hosp. Now go buy some new blades, it will be a lot cheaper than the hosp bill you will get.
|
Oh Sugarbee! I already treated those things with respect...but it will now be GREAT respect. I am so sorry! This too shall pass. Guess this makes officially you a VETERAN!!! (smile!) Maybe quilters who get injured on the job deserve something equivalent to a Purple Heart. What shall we call this 'ribbon?" Hummm....I'm thinking...
|
Had this same kind of accident years ago, I purchased a mesh wire glove (lightweight) and I wear it all the time now because I love myself and i don'tlike to get hurt.
|
OUCH!
Thanks for sharing your story with us. What a good reminder. . . |
This made me moan just reading it! Glad you went on to the hospital. Hope you are already healing!
|
Ouch! hope it is feeling better. I have a little paper cut on my finger and it hurts,I can't imagine the pain you are feeling. Get well soon.

Instinctively; I ran it under water, which only made it bleed more but I could see it wasn't that deep. Geez-----how dumb can one be, I got the blood to subside long enough for me to go call for help.
When my friend came, he almost passed out! O.K., he says, lets go to the hospital. No, I cried even more. It's not that bad, just a little blood. "But you've got a flap of skin there that's about to fall off. You need to get to the hospital." " Alright, but only because I don't want to argue with you." When we got there, we waited with a blood-soaked thumb for about 15 minutes. Then they took me right into the Fastrac and numbed it to stop the bleeding, and to my surprise they sewed it up with 7 stitches. The rotary cutter went down the middle of my thumb, they say I will lose the nail. I'm lucky though, it could have been much worse, I could have lost my entire thumb. ~~~~But this was only a minor setback.~~~~~ |

I hope it doesn't hurt anymore. I have a problem with my rotary cutter skipping and I have done the same thing. I have been lucky so far that all I have messed up is my fabric. I think I will slow down from now on.
PS: Today is my birthday and I gave myself a present I am sure I will really enjoy. I joined this forum. I love to sew and am teaching myself to quilt. Happy Thanksgiving to all. |

I just wanted to update everyone on my quilting FuPaw. It's been over a year now that I cut my thumb with the rotary cutter. The doctor said that I would lose my nail- I didn't. But I have learned a valuble lesson here. This too was just a set back to me, I didn't let it stop me from quilting. I'm still hard at it.
In fact, I recently put a embroidery machine on lay-away from my LQS. I'm giving myself until March, and then I going to pay it off and get it out. I talked to the owner of the store, and they will provide lessons to teach me how to use the machine. |
Glad to hear you've mended well!
What is a FuPaw? |
A FuuPaw in my terms is a stupid mistake.
|
You are more likely to get cut with a dull blade. Change them when they get dull and use the rotary cutter like it was a paint brush, not a shovel. Feeling your pain right in the tip of the index finger that got in the way.
|
When I read FuuPaw I think of Faux Pas (because it sounds the same)
Glad to hear your thumb healed and you did not lose the nail. Strange coincidence that you bumped the thread so close to the same time that I was thinking about my rotary cutter and that I need to sharpen or change the blade (going to try the tinfoil sharpening method before swapping it out) |
