Quilting gadget for removing loose threads

I have heard quilters talk of this gadget...used for removing threads in between quilting layers...I need one...where can I find one...

DebraK 02-17-2014 08:04 AM

can you be more specific about how it's supposed to work?

Tartan 02-17-2014 08:08 AM

I believe it is a kind of eraser end on the new seam ripper. It looks kind of like a little bee hive. You can probably get the same result with a regular eraser.

DebraK 02-17-2014 08:10 AM

I guess the phrasing messed me up. I thought of the eraser thingy too, but "between quilting layers" made me think it might be something else. I guess I consider that tool more for a "seamy" purpose, while piecing (or un-piecing) the top;-)

There is a small mustache trimmer that can be used to cut the threads withing the quilt sandwich. Several online sites and a few LQS's do sell them. But they really were made as mustache trimmers. LA'ers seem to love them. I have one but haven't used it yet.

DebraK 02-17-2014 08:15 AM

ah! removing stitches. that makes more sense.

dunster 02-17-2014 09:03 AM

From your description, I think you have some threads showing through the quilt top after it has been quilted, and you want to pull them out? Here is one place that sells items for that purpose, but you can use a very fine crochet hook just as easily. http://frederickchill.com/sales_pokenpull.php

DebraK 02-17-2014 09:08 AM

Perfect! from her description, that is it! So she did describe her problem concisely ;-)

quilter2090 02-17-2014 10:32 AM

Check out Fons and Porter's website, I think the seam ripper you are thinking of is sold by them.

Thank you Dunster...That is exactly what I was talking about... I didn't know the name of it or who sold it...$19...hmm...how badly do I want to get rid of my threads...

Seam Fix

seam ripper on one end. Rubber "honey dipper" on the other end. Use this end to grip/pull the cut threads fom the fabric.

She is not looking for a seam ripper. I have the Soft Touch and I had trouble using it, I mad a tiny hole in my quilt from trying to get the thread out. So practice using it before using on your quilt. It's the same size as the hook that came in the hair streaking kits my DD used when she was in High School.

knlsmith 02-18-2014 06:42 AM

I bought a tiny crochet hook and it was only a couple dollars. Works great for getting threads out of the layers.

I just pull out any threads I can grasp and cut them.

When the thread is underneath the quilt top and showing through like a shadow you can't just reach and pull it without getting between the top and the batting somehow.

I do as Dunster, a very fine crocket hook pokes through the quilt top or the backing and easily pulls out the ugly little bit of thread.

I do have to giggle how several of us misread the original quest of help.

Lady Diana 02-19-2014 07:56 AM

The reason why, I think this guy selling the wooden handled pic for $19, is because you can tell from his site that he dabbles in wood related items. He puts in a lot of time working on that handle....I'm sure the end that quilters need, is a very small crochet hook which is stuck in his prized handle. NOT WORTH THE MONEY for quilters, we need practical, reasonable tools, even if it is everyday items found around the house that work.

quiltedbrandy 02-19-2014 08:01 AM

Fons and Porter makes a seam ripper that has the little beehive shaped end. After ripping the seam with the sharp end you use the 'beehive" end like an eraser along the seam to remove the loose threads. Works pretty well.

I have to disagree. I like tools that have a dose of pretty along with quality. My quilting life is too short to give up the pretty when I can have it. A beautiful handmade quality tool is a simple joy to have and use.

RedGarnet222 02-19-2014 09:28 AM

I just picked one of these up at windy moon quilts while I was checking out they had it on the counter next to the register. Clever to put it near where you could just add it to the stack. LOL!

sewbizgirl 02-19-2014 10:30 AM

My tool for this is also the cheapest thing around... a plain ole straight edge razor blade. They are great for ripping, and also remove threads well when you gently scrape them sideways across the ripped seam, kind of like stroking the fabric. I have to have some razor blades handy when I sew!

I checked them out and you are right - a very fine crochet hook would work for this purpose! Great suggestion!

I have some of my Grandmothers crochet hooks that she used with very fine thread they are very very tiny I think they could be used for that. If you could find one of those I'm sure it wouldn't cost that much.

I have one and love it. It will not cut the fabric as you shave the threas.

gale 02-19-2014 03:13 PM

sorry but it's cracking me up that people on this thread are talking about so many different things, most of which are not what the OP is looking for. lol

tessagin 02-19-2014 03:45 PM

Same here. I have the smallest size crochet hook that I use. I also have a tiny size brush to brush over the hole and work the threads back together.

After careful examination and trials with the Soft Touch and a tiny crochet hook, I found that the Soft Touch has a thinner hook with a slight edge, so it goes into the fabric like a needle but will tear the fabric easy if you aren't careful. The crochet hook has to be pushed into the fabric as the hook is thicker and rounder.
