Quilting Kits question

Do Kits come with everything cut out already?

Jackie Spencer 01-16-2013 05:21 PM

No, but the different fabric amounts are cut, usually with a little extra to allow for mistakes.

no, they give you squares or rectangles that are big enough (usually and if you don't make any mistakes)...and you have to cut out the individual pieces themselves. I don't buy may kits, but I understand that some kits will have a little extra, some exactly what you need with no waste, and occasionally you'll get one that doesn't have enough of one or more fabrics. If you do kits, make sure you understand the requirements for each piece of fabric before you start cutting - that way you won't have any surprises at the end.

I think it depends on the quilt. The ones I've purchased are not cut out.

once in a while - now with everyone using the go-cutters there seem to be a few more than used to be-but generally a kit comes with the fabric requirements called for on the pattern- then you have to follow the cutting instructions ... always read about the kit you are interested in- sometimes they do not include the pattern- it may be a kit for a pattern that is free on a particular site-or in a magazine- or in a book which you have to purchase separately. but it is not common for the pieces to be cut out for you-
if you purchase a kit it is always best to lay out all of the fabrics, measure each piece & identify it with the pattern/fabric list before you cut anything---that way if an error has been made & you are short a fabric, or missing one you can contact the place you purchased from right away- also, that way you don't cut something out-only to find further down the road that it was not the correct piece- mistakes do on occassion happen- humans put together kits- so start out organized-knowing what you have to work with...read through the whole pattern before you start.

Actually, there ARE some kits that come with fusible-backed die-cut appliques, but they are kind of expensive. If you hate cutting, or are unable to physically, these might be a good idea for you.

I just bought a king size quilt kit already cut off e-bay.

Hi,

I have many many kits......love em! I worked at my LQS and when we cut kits we did so generously ( I did!) and kits were the quilt top, borders, and binding. Backing is extra the majority of the time.
I like kits and my cupboard shows it, but they are complete with the backing fabric!
I haven't ever see a kit for sale that is cut out.....least not up my way.
When I see a quilt that I love the pattern, and the fabrics, and there's a kit of it done up.....out comes the cash, it's mine!

Thank you, I never bought a kit and wanted to know this.
