Hello all!
I just started a Log Cabin quilt - most of the information that I am finding out on the web recommends that you tie and not quilt. I realize there are a lot of layers to go through and I am a newbie lol. Has anyone quilted a Log Cabin? Thanks so much! |
I did one a few years ago that I hand quilted ( A meander with star since there were stars appliqued on it ). But you could also do some of the "rounds" of the log cabin, or the logs... If you machine quilt, a meaner would look fine. Depending on how you arrange your log cabin, you may be able to look at the dark and light sides and come up with something.
I know... that was as clear as mud... I struggle with how to quilt things, too. It become such a personal decision and how you want things to look... |
Not long ago I made a log cabin table runner & I quilted it diagonally. It turned out really nice. I just don't know how easy that would be to do with a large quilt. :D

You can tie, quilt or even quilt as you go. Particularly for the log cabin, quilt as you go is pretty darn easy.

Another design that looks really good on a log cabin quilt is crosshatch. Are you hand quilting or machine quilting this?

I machine stippled mine--I used coordinating thread to match the fabrics.

I have hand quilted a good many Log Cabin quilts and I either quilt in a 1/4" around each block or else quilt just in the center of each strip and make a square out of each round. Does that make sense?

Your quilt is absolutely beautiful. Some lucky winner will certainly enjoy it, and they've needed it this winter to keep warm up there! I like how you broke up the 'lines' with the flowers. I never know how to quilt things, but really like the look on this one. Bernice |
I also am a newbie - this is my first log cabin to quilt and after much thingking - 1 yrs worth - I am cross hatching and it is working wonderfully - I should have a picture posted in about 2wks of the finished product - with sides attached - I'm doing it in sections. It's a blue and white - so I'm switching threads as I go. any questions - just pm me. good luck

I made a log cabin cushion cover, and stitched in the ditch, which came out well.

Thank you to all who responded. Once I get all the blocks done and arranged I may take a picture of it and ask for suggestions from the group. :) I would be quilting by hand, I do not like the way my machine quilts. I machine quilted only one project - clear nylon was recommended in the pattern and I really was disappointed in how it came out. :(

My first quilt was a log cabin and I quilted it with diagonal lines over the whole quilt. It turned out good, but I think next time I would stitch in the ditch around each log.

I had thought about going around each log.. I wonder how difficult it will be to go through all of the layers. My strips are 1.5 inches. Which leaves about 1 inch of fabric after sewing with 1/4 seams. soooo I would be quilting through 3 layers of material and the batting. Thoughts to ponder lol.
