Quilting a memory quilt with pictures

When you quilt a memory quilt with pictures, do you put any quilting through the pictures. I plan to double batt my quilt with poly cotton and wool and have been advised to do stitching with invisible thread through the pictures to ensure that the batting does not fall forward over time. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I've quilted a couple of memory quilts with pictures and I did not quilt the pictures themselves. There is no reason you couldn't but I wanted the pictures to stand out and to me they just looked better unquilted.

I've not quilted through the pictures on memory quilts. I quilt around them but it would depend on how large the pictures are. If they are large and require quilting I would try to just do some detail/ accent quilting on them and not ( meander) all over them.

You might outline a person but do as minimal as possible.

My pictures were only about 5x5 and I didn't quilt them. If they were bigger, I would've added a little quilting for the same reason you stated.

I think you need to follow the bat recommendations on how closely your quilting lines need to be--if the pictures are larger than the suggested distance I'd use a monopoly and just outline around the people in pictures.

My blocks are 8x8 so I quilt around figures and accent other features in the pictures that I want to bring out.

Just a thought, what about not using batting but a thin layer of washed muslim or preshrunk flannel in between? Maybe just use a backing like fleece/minky and forget the batting altogether if you are worried about batting shifting and the quilting interfering with the photos.

I just finished a quilt with pictures all over it and I like to detail the pictures so they aren't so puffy. This one also had double batting, although I don't use wool. It came out quite nice! I didn't share it here because I'm trying to learn Windows 10 which I dislike immensely & find I can't get where I used to anymore!! Pictures only share to e-mail so far. Grrr!
