Quilting with minky or other cuddle fabrics
 

Hi,

A friend at work brought me a bunch of fabric. Some of which were cut into squares, which I will add more of my own fabric to make some scrappy quilts. One of the pieces that she had in there was minky. I have never worked with minky before. She has some of it cut into squares, but there is a piece big enough to back a crib size quilt with. Are there rules for quilting with minky. I love the feel of it, and may just put it away for the next grandbaby.

I have used it for a quilt back on a baby quilt which was machine quilted, with no problems. I have read on here of other members using it to piece with.

I use it for backing all the time. No problems just don't quilt alot. If you are going to use it for piecing I like to use my walking foot but that's just me and if I have to pin I pin sideways. FabricDepot used to have a nice how to article, check it out.

I just finished a quilt for my son to take to college that was minky all on the front. This is my favorite quilt that I have made (so far). I cut it in 9" squares and pieced it together. I have to admit it was a real challenge for me when I was piecing it together. Whether it was the stretch or the pile that posed the biggest challenge - I don't know but I said a few choice words at that point. I machine quilted it at home and it went very easy - no problems. I will agree that when you cut it does make a big mess

I just finished a toddler quilt with a Minky back. I sandwiched the quilt with Elmers Glue and had no problems. I used my walking foot to machine quilt. I must say, I was not looking forward to quilting it, but was pleasantly surprised.

I have used Minkee -- I spray baste it to either the top or the batting (depending on how heavy I want the quilt). That keeps it from stretching too much out of shape when I FMQ.

I have backed a T-shirt quilt with minky BUT I tied it . I have made a baby quilt with the minky back and just bar tacked it here and there in the corners and middle of the blocks etc. That's what my grandkids want on the back of their T-shirt quilts Minky!! Which is tied either with 3 strands of embroidery thread or crochet thread, which is a little like fine cord.

I find the stretchy fabrics a bit fiddly to load, but the results are wonderful! Here is a picture of a baby quilt I just completed. I found the backing at a discount fabric store, so I cannot tell you the maker. It seems to be a plush fabric with nap on both sides. (Minkee has a soft nap on one side). You can see how the quilting just embossed itself on the back! I had to piece a bit in the corner. I tried to use the backing on my frame and they were both the same size. Lesson learned! I thought I could fudge as I went and ended up having to add a bit in a corner. Baby will not care and probably no one will see it but me...BUT I won't do THAT again! lol
