I am working on a complicated sampler (large throw size). Some of the blocks have needle-turn applique, others not. Have any of you ever machine quilted over the appliqued pieces? The long arm quilter who quilts for me does not do custom quilting. This would be a nightmare to hand quilt.

I am no expert but I don't quilt over my applique. I mostly do meandering. I use a small meander around the applique and larger in pieced blocks.

I've quilted over fusible applique, but I would be hesitant about quilting over hand applique. Call me crazy, but I really respect the work involved in hand applique and would not feel good about quilting over it. I've done a quilting design around hand applique, but never over it. Just my opinion, of course.

I read in a book somewhere many years ago that the difference is only that quilting over the applique makes the applique basically become "part" of the overall quilt whereas quilting around the the applique makes it pop--it's just a matter of personal choice.

I did a Hawaiian quilt (pillow size) and quilted over the pattern, using echo quilting. It was OK though on my other applique work, I've not quilted over it. Depends on the look you want.

I would quilt around the applique but I wouldn't quilt over them.

As a quilt show judge I would not give very high regard for machine quilting over hand applique - nor machine applique. A machine quilter, unless using a pantograph can quilt around it or can stop at the appliaque and begin at the other side. Even with pantograph should be able to stop and start again.

Well, if you are taking a count, I agree with the majority. I do a lot of machine applique, but I don't quilt over it. I echo quilt or use stipple around it to make the applique pop. Just my opinion.

Until about a year ago I would have agreed not to go over applique, but I was at a quilt show and saw some beautiful applique with quilting on it. It was custom quilted to go with the design, quilting done as veins on leaves, and petal shaped accents on flowers. I don't think I would do an all over design on top of applique.

I do the same.
