I bought to Accuquit go and now I LOVE triangles, each is perfect and do dog ears to mess me up!!!

inletjerry 08-19-2011 08:25 AM

Haven't tried circles, don't appeal to my country style. Totally agree that paper piecing is not fun to me.

M T V 08-19-2011 09:28 AM

I love doing paper piecing & applique. To me they are more accomplishing than a larger quilt. They do not take as long so the results are quicker & seem more gratifying? I am not a patient person by any means so I am surprised I have the patience especially for paper piecing.
Give it a try! I got my sister hooked!

Anna.425 08-19-2011 10:09 AM

I am very visual and have to be able to visualize a project before I do it. I just can't see how curves work so I have never tried them and am hesitant to do so. I need to find a class to learn how to do them.

Major DITTO time here. Both scare me to no end. I don't even like looking at patterns that have them!

katiebear1 08-19-2011 10:29 AM

Mine is the log cabin block. I tried to make a table runner as my second project when I started quilting' I thought it looked easy. Well it used 1 inch strips. I should never have tried something with such small pieces as my second project. It was a mess! I am still scared of log cabins, but I love them Soon I will attempt one again, but with MUCH bigger pieces:)

For me, postage stamp quilts, circles and applique. I have done machine applique for years and years; back before there were machines specially made for applique. One day I will tackle those round shapes. I tried needle turn and found with my arthritic wrists and hands I can't do it perfect enough to suit me. So no hand work any more. But when I see a postage stamp quilt it just makes me shiver; they are gorgeous but just too many seams to make perfect.

colleen1978 08-19-2011 10:39 AM

Sewing curves is my phobia. I'e tried and can't get them to turn out so that they lay flat.

sandy l 08-19-2011 11:03 AM

I don't do bias seams either

Linnie 08-19-2011 11:19 AM

I'm working on my first triangles now. I understand your feelings

ndlurker 08-19-2011 11:48 AM

My first quilting project had half-square triangles in it. they aren't too bad, and the rest you just have to be careful. My quilt instructor told me not to be afraid to try, as you'll be surprised what you can do. She's given me approval, after two beginning classes, to take advanced beginner and even intermediate projects next go round.

Ditto to that. And practice and practice and practice some more and just maybe, they will be your favorite.

I really don't like doing hand applique, but get/borrow whatever, the dvd by the girls from "piece of cake", their approach is so much more informative and makes you almost wanting to try......the video has great close up shots... I have never heard of using parchment paper for machine applique, but I use freezer paper for mine. I do know some people who do hand app use freezer paper on the front of the piece and then fold over at the edge of the freezer paper...use it as a guide....

luckylindy333 08-19-2011 12:38 PM

I am afraid to do hand applique. I did some once and did not like the way it came out, so have a mental block against it. I know it is silly. I am doing a block of the month right now that has applique in a center medallion. I started doing raw edge applique, but maybe I will attempt some needle turn on this project...

tangledthread 08-19-2011 12:57 PM

Color terrifies me! Are the going to match? Will they look good together, are the values correct? Will the border match the quilt? Gives me heartburn, but I am slowly learning about values, and color...very slowly.

teacherbailey 08-19-2011 12:58 PM

Paper piecing....still can't wrap my brain around that backwards/sew on the wrong side thing. And applique I can handle IF it's hand blanket stitch but otherwise I avoid it like the plague!

Here's a tip I once read: Any 5 colors and fabrics may be very tricky to match up BUT any 15 or 20 aren't. If you like the scrappy look, just stay with some color description for all of the fabrics (brights, winter colors, autumn colors, Easter pastels or whatever) and you'll be absolutely fine!

GailG 08-19-2011 02:54 PM

I thik the biggest threat to me is the scrappy! Curved lines comes just behind that.

phylby 08-19-2011 02:58 PM

Things with lots of points.

TheSevenYearStitch 08-19-2011 03:03 PM

I found paper-peicing to be horribly simple. But applique...it's the Michael Meyers of quilting techniques! It horrifies me!

trolleystation 08-19-2011 03:39 PM

Forget diamonds.....

fireworkslover 08-19-2011 06:21 PM

Do make triangles w/ paper piecing. That's the only way I've tackled them and they come out perfect. I always have nice sharp points.
Now needle turn applique - that's my fear.

Quiltinelaine 08-19-2011 06:46 PM

Never get anywhere if you don't TRY::: Don't be afraid - this is your hobby and it is soooo much FUN: Never sqush your creativity by limiting yourself::: Go for it:: The seam ripper is my buddy:::

Pat G 08-19-2011 07:34 PM

My fear now is of making huge quilts. I find them just too much to handle. Now that I'm finally FMQing my work, I couldn't even do a lapsize. I did one block & hated it so much I took out every little stitch. I haven't touched that beaut. top again. I will someday but ...................?

JeanieG 08-19-2011 07:52 PM

I do not have a problem with triangles, but for those that do, check out this software. I bought it and if you need a lot of triangles of the same fabric, this works really well. Check it out here:

I like paper piecing, but I know what you mean about which way round everything goes. I have poor spatial skills, so I've never fixed it in my mind, and every time I do some paper piecing I have to go back to some basic instructions. This one

http://www.winnowing.com/ppp.html

is my favourite.

amma 08-19-2011 10:08 PM

Mine is checked fabric and plaids... trying to cut and keep all of the lines straight while piecing them :D:D:D

Geri B 08-20-2011 04:31 AM

re: paper piecing...I had that same backward sewing thing. Then I bought Carol Doak dvd...it is now still backward sewing, but her video made it easier to understand. When I do something with it, I kind of first have to sit back and clear my head of regular sewing, then begin........just my way

watched the video.....if the software is reasonably priced, I may look into it...good to have in the arsenal of gadgets.....I like to use triangles on a roll for doing large amounts of triangles, this software might take the place of rolls of different sizes of t-o-r or having to trip to lqs for what size I might need

SharonTheriault 08-20-2011 06:14 AM

Applique and I don't get along. Then there's paper piecing. I've done it a couple of times, turned out okay, but have also taken classes on it which really warped my thinking on paper piecing. I've done needle turn applique too, but may never do it again.

I want to make them but I am so scared of messing them up. *Sigh* Am I alone in being afraid to make certain types of blocks or shapes in their blocks? I should say that I am not a new quilter either. I have been quilting since ’95. So, yeah. Sixteen years and not a triangle in anything I have ever made. LOL

I didn't read through the responses so sorry it this is a repeat. For triangles you need the "TUCKER TRIMMER." It is amazing I promise you will love triangles after you use it. They come out perfect and it is so so so so EASY!!!!

have managed all of the above but decided to hand quilt my hand pieced GFG am haveing a terrible time with quilting stitch and my hand hurts it maybe that i am too old to do handquilting anymore

MISHNJIM 08-20-2011 05:58 PM

Mine is like a lot of you....Circles & Curves....If it has a straight line, I'll try it. Applique...Ummmmm, not good at it. Paperpiecing is time consuming but once you get the hang of it, it's fun.

kathdavis 08-20-2011 08:04 PM

Check out the CD program called Triangulations. You layer two pieces of fabric place the paper on top, stitch on the dotted lines and cut on the lines. Poof! You have triangle half squares. Go for it!

ladyredhawk 08-20-2011 09:24 PM

mine is circles and that drunkers path or what ever they call it.

ging10ging 08-21-2011 05:06 PM

My nightmare is paperpiecing and I think if I just dive in it won't be so bad. We all have something that is our devil. Sue

I can make very nice HST's, that is, they look really nice, even, straight, right size, etc. Sometimes I sew diagonally across squares, sometimes sew along the outside edges, depending on how many I need. Press Lots of starch. Pin carefully. BUT, when I put them together, there goes the points. But I will persevere, and hope to get it right someday.. But those flat tires of circle appliques, grrr...maybe after I conquer my points, the flat tires will behave!

Jo Mama 08-31-2011 09:16 AM

Half square triangles make me nervous.

Grandma Libby 09-01-2011 09:28 AM

Don't be afraid of triangles...you'll do fine. The first quilt I ever made was triangles, all through it, and guess what, no one had told me at that point to "stay away from triangles", if you were a beginner. i didn't know the difference! They looked great....! lol

ube quilting 09-01-2011 12:58 PM

Girls! You have to do it to learn it. Did you learn to ride a bike? Drive a car? Cook anything? Do laundry? Sew triangles? Circles? It is just another thing to learn in life and it will open so much for you in the way of creativity.

Consider making a table runner. Find a pattern. Nothing big. Get some fabric you like. If you like the fabric chances are you will like the project. Now, if you really want to do it you will give yourself the challenge or you can make squares and strips forever, If it makes you happy.

Try stopping at a LQS and ask for a mini lesson. You may be surprised how helpful they will be. Thank them by purchasing a pattern and a few FQ.

Please! try it. There is nothing to lose and so much to gain!
