Quilting rulers
I am in need of a new 24 inch ruler. Do any of you have suggestions on which to buy? 6x24 or 8x24? Which brand? Anything you especially like or hate about certain brands? I am currently using one with neon yellow markings and find it very hard to read. Any thoughts welcome!
TIA |
Whichever width you buy, get a Creative Grids ruler! Easy to read and non-slip!
I like the Creative Grids 8.5 X 24. Thin lines, and the wider width makes it easy to line up on the fold for accurate cuts. It also has a textured back that keeps it from slipping. Many people find the CG rulers confusing, however, because of the additional half inch and also they have measurements going from right to left and left to right so make sure you look at it before you decide.
The Olfa Frosted rulers are nice. I like Creative Grids too. I use the 6 x 24 as much as the 8 x 24. If you can only have one, get the 8 x 24.
Creative Grids are all I use. Really like them.
I like Creative Grids and Olfa the most. Of the two, I think I prefer Olfa.
If you can afford the price on the Creative Grid ruler, I would get that one. I just recently bought a 4.5" square and it doesn't slide at all.
I got the creative grid 8.5 by 24 and I love it I am slowly replacing all my rulers with the creative grid ones.
Thanks, everyone! I will be looking into the Olfa and Creative Grids rulers. I think I have decided on the size: 8x24. I don't mind a "learning curve" on learning to use the ruler, as long as I can see the markings. There is just something about the yellow markings that my eyes don't like! Going to a quilt show next Friday, so hopefully I will get to look at a few different rulers.

6.5x24 Creative grids ruler. I adore mine been using it all week along with my june tailor shape cut
feel you on the yellow markings I purchased because readily available at joanns and I use optima mostly which they no longer make but the markings on it are similar to creative grids so the yellow is annoying
If you don't get Creative Grids, athletic tape in a few places works really well to prevent sliding.
I got rid of all my yellow line rulers. They are the worst.
I have had 2 sizes of Quilter's Rule rulers that I love(d). One was 6.5 X 14" which I got when I first started quilting in the 90's and which I literally wore out a number of years ago - I don't think they make that size anymore. The other I still have which is a 6.5 X 24" and which is still going strong. The extra half inch width comes in very handy! I plan to check out the Creative Grid ones next time I shop for a ruler, though.

Love the Olfa frosted rulers!
Love the Olfa frosted, so easy to read on any color fabric!
I, too, like Creative Grids for ease of reading. And I would go with 8" or wider if available and it's in your budget.
I will consider Creative Grids on my next purchase but I like the 6x24 size.

Another plug for Creative Grids. Not only do they have non slip grip to make them safer and more accurate, but the numbers/lines are done in dark and light so they are easily visible on all types of fabric.
Thanks, everyone! Sounds like Creative Grids is a fav of many, so I am leaning in that direction. The quilt show is Friday, so hopefully I can compare some rulers...
I prefer the olfa frosted rulers because they are easy to read. They are not as skid resistant as the creative gridd ones, but more slip resistant than some of the other brands.
I do have some of the Creative Grids rulers, but I find the markings are too " busy" and have to pay close attention to what I am doing when using them. |
Creative Grids. They absolutely don't slip. I'm replacing all my rulers with them and giving the old ones to friends who quilt. They are happy, but I'm happier. A couple of Eleanor Burns rulers will stay with me...I particularly like the Square UP bought in the 1980's and just can't let it go.

Creative grids is the best clearest ruler on the market.
Please let us know what you find and decide on. And the reason. (Inquiring minds want to know!!)
I like 8 x 24 --either Olfa or Creative Grid.
I have lots of different rulers and sizes. I mainly use a 6 x 24" ruler, don't remember who makes it.
only use my creative grid rulers. Best on the market. IMHO
Olfa frosted is my favorite. I have Creative Grids and it's much better than most, but I just like the visibility of olfa. I also like the 6x24 more than 8x24. I don't like working with rulers any bigger than I have to. My absolute favorite is a 6x12 Olfa frosted.
Another vote for Creative Grids. Adding to my collection over time
Well. Looks like I need to check out Creative Grids.
I REALLY like my 5x24 ruler that has a "lip" to grab the edge of the cutting mat. |
There is a new ruler by Quilters Select, that is supposed to be fabulous. I don't have one yet, but that is what I'm going to try the next time I need to replace my rulers. They don't have an 8 x 24 but do have a 6 x 24, and a few other sizes. The numbers read left to right and right to left, so it doesn't matter which way you use the ruler or if you are right or left handed. They are frosted, so it is easy to see on fabric, and they have a non slip coating over the entire ruler, not just in "spots" like the Creative Grids. They are supposed to be coming out with more sizes in the future also.

I have both a 6" and an 8" version. I started with the 6" and bought the 8" version after I took a French Braid class and needed the 8" width for trimming. |
