Quilting Season Is Here!
I don't know about the rest of you, but I have a season for quilting. It starts about the time the first frost comes, the garden harvest is coming to an end and the World Series is winding down. (Go Giants!!) I don't quilt, or sew much in the summer because it's just too hot up in the loft and I have way too much to do with my big, veggy garden and besides, I really enjoy being outdoors. I like that quilting is a seasonal thing. It gets me excited when I see the leaves turning color and I'm ready to jump into all of those projects that I've been dreaming up all summer. I'm going to kick things off this year by going to Pacific International Quilt Festival XXIII for a good dose of inspiration. Then, watch out sewing machine, here I come! :)

I'm with you. I sew a little during the hottest part of the summer, but I do have a vegetable garden and play golf one day a week. We have the grandkids today through Monday, then it's off to the sewing machine for me. I have three to quilt, and one to finish piecing. Then I can start something new for the winter. I can't wait! Have fun and make lots of quilts.

I agree too! There's something about the bright, cool fall days that motivates me
|
I live in the HOT desert so I mostly stay indoors with the A/C going. I quilt year round.
|
It's definitely more comfy to have a quilt-in-progress draped over you in the winter as opposed to in the summer, but I'm a year-round quilter too. I just moved my quilting room downstairs - it was in the hottest corner of the house but now it's downstairs in a room that gets lots of shade so I think next summer will be a much better quilting summer.
I AM very much looking forward to some rain, though! My new sewing room has a large window that faces the street, I can't wait to be inside quilting and watching the rain. (My old quilt room window just faced the wall of the neighbor's house. Bor-ring!) |
I quilt for the public so I'm at it all year long. I find any time I can to fit my own projects into the mix but when it is nice outside I have to get out there and do something different. I never get tired of quilting though.

Back home in Massachusetts, my sewing closet was in the basement. We tried to save $$ by not air conditioning that part of the house. There were times I could not go down there at all. I now have a real sewing room with a/c. I am happy that I can quilt whenever I like. Although I do know what you mean by the fall coming, and the desire to work on projects. I love the idea of having several tops done and pinned and then just watching television and doing my hand stitching.

If you're like me you won't be playing easy music in the background. I would fall asleep at the machine with the hum of the machine, the falling rain and no body around, yep I would fall asleep.

I quilt year around, I am not an outside person.

Being disable, I almost quilt every day. Try to iron what I need for the day early in the morning when it is cool. Living in So CA it is like it has been summer for the past year and a half.
|
I quilt year round, I despise winter and love spring and summer when the trees and grass are green and flowers are in bloom. I also garden, we have many large flower beds and its relaxing to switch back and forth between quilting and gardening. We also get to enjoy large bouquets of flowers from our yard as we quilt.

Even though I have air conditioning, i enjoy quilting in the winter months more. I don't know why. I do smaller projects in the summer and bigger quilty things in the winter.

. There is a fabric store within a five minutes walk from my house. Today the owner changed the sign to "Quilting Season is Here!". So funny to see you post this today.

I live in the south where we are held hostage inside by the heat and humidity outside. Thank goodness for the A/C which allows me to quilt or sew whenever I want too. I love the spring and fall because that's when the temps are comfortable enough to get outside and get the summer and fall yard art changed and displayed. I don't like the winter either because we have too little sun and too many dreary days. Seems like the weather pretty much dictates what's on my agenda. :)

I live in Wisconsin so this is my quilting season too. I find I am so much more motivated once summer is over. I decided to make table runners as Christmas gifts for all those wonderful people who transport my daughter with autism making it possible for her to live on her own. All finished and on to a couple quilts I will give as gifts also. I'm not sure why the cooler weather motivates me but I'm going with it.

Yup! It is quilting season here, too. I do piece them in the Spring and the Summer, but Fall and Winter are the time I love to quilt them up. It is so cozy to have a quilt draped over my lap and hand quilt it. Happy fall, y'all!

I quilt and/or scrapbook year round, depending on what hubby's sports are on TV:rolleyes:.....baseball, football, car races. I don't watch. Sometimes I will bring handwork in for "my presence." teeheehee

I love all the seasons! Toward the end of winter I am ready to be warmer, and toward the end of summer I'm ready for winter. I will say that our seasons here in Paradise, California, are mild compared to some parts of the country. I grew up in west Texas so I know what hot can be. :)
A couple of months ago we had a gray, cool and breezy day. I had the window open next to my sewing setup, and the cool wind and gray day got me all excited. Maybe it was the smell of ozone, I don't know, but that was my best sewing day this year. Bring on the rain - please, please, please. |
I quilt year around. Winter in Texas and summer in Northern Michigan
|
I can relate. I have the garden and yard to tend to during the summer and whatever projects I deem worthy to try my hand at outside. Then when the garden is toast and the canning is finished for the year I turn to the sewing room full time. I do work on piecing quilt tops during the hottest part of the day though. Garden work in the early morning while its still cool and then down to the basement where its fairly cool to work on piecing. Have 5 quilts that need quilted now. As I have a robotic system on my quilt machine, late at night I'll work on the quilting layout using my ProQ Designer program. Print out the layout when its finished and pin it to the flimsy so I know its ready to be quilted. Then on to the next quilt top. In between I try to clean up the sewing room after each top is finished and hung up and get ready for the next creation. I'm usually already looking for the next quilt to try my hand at before I get the one I'm working on finished. I also try to incorporate the scraps leftover to be used in the next quilt. My scrap box is over loaded so try not to add to it if I can help it. As I usually have a couple of quilts on the "TO DO" list, if I find a scrap I think might work I'll throw it on the pile for that particular quilt.
|
Same goes for me. I'm in the garden in the cool mornings then I sit at the sewing machine until I have to start supper.
|
My solution to the 'too hot' time of year is to move up north.... Michigan's UP in the summer and downstate in the winter. It's never too hot that way. And, I take stuff for projects up north and then bring it all back down in the winter. If I finish my projects and need more stuff that's a problem. But I do get things done.
|
I'm the same. Spring and summer are for the garden and enjoying the beach. I really hate cold weather, so I spend hours in the studio starting about now. By March I am ready to go outside again.
|
My quilt friends I have started our Count down till P I F Q. We've gone for many years. We were distressed to hear rumors that because of the new Levi Stadium and parking issues that this was going to be the last year. I contacted the company that runs PIFQ and they assured me that the Festival will continue for many years. The opening day on Thursday was just too crowded last year so we are going on Friday.
|
Living in Utah we have a quilting season for sure! I love the seasons and can't wait for the first snow storm to hit so I can bring out the quilts!
|
I quilt year around. I lost my husband last year so it is just me and quilting helps me pass the time.
|
I quilt/sew everyday. Didn't realize there was a SEASON for it.
|
Me too! I have a large garden and love spending time with plants during the summer months. However, I do put a top or two together in the cooler evenings during the summer months, so I'm ready to quilt once the cooler weather arrives.
|
I am always outside when the weather is nice, then in the Fall there is always a lot to do wrapping up the garden and house for winter..but when the first logs go into the fireplace...I quilt!!! I do cut my projects in the summer if I have a rainy spell and I'm itching to quilt...I just cut a top and put it in a baggie so when the weather turns I can go!!
|
I, too, have just finished picking the last of my garden crops (with the exception of a few beets and carrots). I just roasted the last of my tomatoes and put them in the freezer today.
Switching gears from outdoors to indoors just in the knick of time. It was 45 degrees this morning, what better weather to start a quilting project. |
I take an annual summer vacation from quilting just before Memorial Day and it continues until October or so. Living in the north east, there are many days, weeks and months of being inside so once the weather is decent, I find any excuse to enjoy being out in it. I have returned to the sewing room rather reluctantly in the early a.m., before it's warm enough to enjoy spending time outside. All too soon, these beautiful days will be over.
