Quilting On A Sewing Machine
I am in a bit of a bind. I have made a quilt for my boyfriend and now I am stumped on how to quilt it on my sewing machine. The quilt I've made will fit a queen sized bed and I'm having problems getting all that material to fit. Is there any suggestions on what I might do or even direct me to a post since I can't seem to find one yet.
Thanks! |
I roll the quilt firmly from 2 sides. Put one roll inside the machine so the needle is between the rolls, or at the center of the quilt. Start quilting from the center, moving the quilt to the left (away from the machine) as I go. Don't worry about the left side. Just keep moving the quilt to the left as you go. When one side, or 1/4, of the quilt is finished, roll it again and start the process over with the unquilted side in the machine, or to your right.
Doing stitch in the ditch, or limited movement works well this way for a beginner. As you get more comfortable you may allow both rolls to unroll and just move the quilt around in a 4-6 inch area near the needle. I don't know if this makes sense. You can probably find some videos about it on u-tube. |
The throat of my Brother sewing machine is small, so I have found the Quilt-As-You-Go method is what I need to do for a larger quilt (which does NOT help you at this point), or using the "tie" method of old. I have a queen size quilt that I tied and it is so soft, cozy and smooshie compared to the QAYG one which is heavily stippled. You might be able to finish your quilt by the tie method.

I just scrunch it make sure it is supported

I presume you have the entire quilt top put together, right? If the squares are straight across so you could "unsew" the middle of the quilt, you could then quilt it in sections. Marti Mitchell has a book called "Quilting in Sections". That would make your life much easier if you can't scrunch it so that it fits under your harp. Good luck.

Baste the sandwich well first. Then however you best can do it scrunch or roll the sides so you start in the middle and work your way out. Do it like a pie crust ... so far one way and then go back and go another direction to balance out your quilting.
I found it easier NOT to do SID but either highlight areas I want ... or do an allover or meander quilting. ali |
Thank you all so much for your help!
