does anyone use quilting software to play with designs? what do you use? what is your advise on them?

I've got EQ7 and the Quilt Design Wizard. If you've never played with design software the Quilt Design Wizard is only around $20 and it was a great decision maker for me to spend the $ on EQ7.

I've learned a lot from EQ, I'm not a super pro at it, but it's really fun to play with.

I use EQ, Sue Spargo, Sew Precise and love them all.

The Baltimore Album BOM I'm running here on the board was designed on Eq.

I play around with them all, helps to decide what blocks to do, what fabrics and colors. Wouldn't do without, beats drafting on grid paper, as I did in the old days.

The sew precise programs, there are 4, are all paper piecing programs. so if you enjoy PP, they are great. I use them alot. I'm doing a double wedding ring from it now, I run newspaper print through my printer and works great.

Sue Spargo is great for wool quilts, which I love doing.

Charming here on the QB had a copy of Design Wizard for sale. You might want to contact her if you are interested in trying out the software
