Quilting with Solids

I think I remember hearing somewhere, maybe on Fons & Porter Love of Quilting, there are things to remember when using solids in a quilt. The quilt I have in mind involves some solid fabrics. Are there guidelines for using solids or did I make the whole thing up?

I don't know about anything else but it sure shows up your quilting--good or bad!

The only thing I can think I keep in mind, but this is for any types of fabric, is paying attention to color value. I always like to have a good mix of color value, but esp. with solids and tonals.

I didn't realize there were any rules . . . but I do try to stay away from thinner solids.

Look at some of the Amish designs for great ideas using solids!!

I rarely use solids. Any mistakes show up with solids. If I need a fairly solid color I usually use white on white or cream on white. I want my mistakes hidden somewhat since there are so many of them. lol

I don't think there are any rules, just use a good fabric. I noticed that a lot of the modern quilts are using all or mostly solids, maybe you read something while looking at those articles. I don't think I have seen anything. However if you find it let us all know, always willing to read and learn or read and ignore.

Oh no, I just bought some Kona solids fat quarters and some yardage to go with it. I saw a quilt here that a woman made with solids and loved it and thought I had to make a quilt like it. It was so bold. I'm not an advanced quilter, so now I'm thinking I better make my blocks pretty basic since I do have trouble with flying geese and sometimes lining things up perfectly. Dang it. I just ordered it this morning. Oh well, I'll make it for me!!

I use solids all of the time. The actual quilting motif really shows up there--so if you are not comfortable with your actual quilting---it may be a problem.
