Quilting stitches coming out while binding...
 

I've been quilting for many years but only hand quilting. I recently have taken a couple quilts to a long arm quilter and they have done a beautiful job. They quilt edge to edge. Here is what I'm having issues with, and I've combed the internet and, I can't find anything out there. I used to sew on my binding 1/4" from the edge, after squaring up my quilt and cutting off the excess. Now I sew my binding on a 1/2" from the edge thinking this would solve the issue. I then wrap the binding around to the back and Hand sew it to the back.
I see some of the quilting coming super close to the machine sewn binding stitch or sometimes coming all the way out from UNDER the machine stitch and now my quilt has loose stitches. I hope I'm explaining this right. Anotherwords, the quilt stitching is not staying secured under the binding line stitches. This is new to me, and I can't be the only person out there with this issue!
When I hand quilted, I guess I never went to the edge or over my borders.
PLEASE HELP....
The last quilt I was literally trying to hand quilt and tie loose threads together for hours trying to fix her work so my quilt didn't come apart.

Hopefully one of the members with a long arm will pop in with advice. Have you had more than one person do quilting for you?

I have a longarm. I baste all around the perimeter somewhere between 1/8 and 1/4" from the edge and my quilting does not cross that basting. IOW, I don't run the quilting stitching "off the edge" because I don't want to risk cutting through it when I square up.

Is your longarmer doing so?

Maybe sew a machine row of stitching 1/8 to 1/4 inch from the edge of the sandwich to hold the quilting threads in place before attaching the binding?

Before putting the binding on, edge stitch the quilt using a small stitch, about 1/8" from the edge. That should catch any quilting stitches in place. Actually my longarm quilter requires this to be done before sending her the quilts.

I have a longarm, and I do run the stitching over the edge. When I square up the quilt, I cut through the quilting stitches. I sew the binding on 1/4” from the edge. I’ve never had the quilting stitches come undone from under the binding. The line of the binding stitches holds the loose ends of the quilting stitches in place. This has been my experience.

I have always sewn a stay stitch all around the quilt before binding.

I am guessing you're talking about stitching the quilt top, not the entire quilt sandwich. Otherwise how would they be able to load the 3 layers.

OP's issue is the quilting stitches loosening, not the piecing stitches.

I wonder if your longarmer should be using a shorter stitch length.
