Quilting Styles

Isn't it great that there are sooo many different quilting styles available? Traditional, Modern,Art styles. For me personally, I find Modern quilts to be usually boring, so much negative space, very simplistic piecing. I love to challenge myself when I quilt, but, that is just me. As my Mom always said, it would be a very boring world if everyone liked the same thing. What do you think?

Rose Marie 03-03-2013 06:33 AM

I do traditional and modern. Depends on what you are making it for.
Have not tried art quilting and am not that talented with art.
Just did a simple modern bed quilt with batiks and sent it out for quilting.
Usually make lap size and baby quilts and quilt them myself. But large quilts are to hard for me to quilt on my machine even though it has a 10 in throat.
Bought a cheap embroidery machine with a 4 in design area and am having a ball with it. Made a baby quilt with red work teddy bears.

gabeway 03-03-2013 07:26 AM

Have tried and enjoyed all types but tend to gravitate towards traditional!

Tartan 03-03-2013 07:42 AM

I like them all but for me traditional quilting is more my style. The modern quilts look more like art for the wall so you can appreciate the design. I watched the Smilebox on the modern quilts competition recently on The Quilt Show and they were some interesting designs but a lot of grey.

Skratchie 03-03-2013 07:52 AM

I like the modern look of quilts, and I'm glad to see that there are people willing to put themselves out there to do something different. But I usually do traditional patterns with a more modern fabric look than most folks I've seen. I am not a fan of "traditional" fabrics - repros bore me and I'm not a fan of calico type fabrics.

I am finishing up a VERY traditional churn dash for my DH - he chose the fabrics, and it's been a quilt that's years in the making because I don't like the fabrics at all. I've been toying with an idea lately to make the same quilt using much more modern fabric choices. But my next quilt has to be for my mother, who quilts herself, but made a comment the other day about how I've made quilts for my MIL, my grandmother in law, my grandmother, and my dad, but not one for her. She's not the most subtle person in the world, is she? LOL I'm trying to decide what pattern I want to make for her, but you can bet the fabric will be something I like better than the Civil War Repros my husband chose!

I have tried so many "styles" and just never know which style I will attempt next. I believe that is one of the many parts of quilting that keeps it fun and challenging at the same time.

mighty 03-03-2013 07:54 AM

I like doing all different, Like to challenge myself.

jcrow 03-03-2013 08:03 AM

I LOVE LOVE LOVE modern quilts!!! I love the negative space. I love everything about modern quilts! I also findo repro fabrics not to my liking. I love Civil War fabrics though. I love traditional quilts also. I love the art quilts. I just received a $40 book on making art quilts. I want to try that. I'm leery of it. I draw quite well, but don't know if that is what it takes to make an art quilt. I think I will make an applique art quilt to begin with.

I don't like Kaffe Fassett fabric at all. It reminds me of curtains from the 70s or bedspreads from cheap motels. I accidentally ordered a whole fat quarter bundle of his and promptly gave it away. I don't like the craziness of the fabric design. I don't know why. It's not pleasing to my eyes.

There really is something in quilting for everyone. And if it doesn't exist yet -- we can make it!

ArtsyOne 03-03-2013 09:34 AM

I love the modern quilts now. When I first started, I only knew traditional and made several of those while collecting modern art for my walls. Never put the two together - that I could make a modern quilt! I'm so glad that there are others out there who are willing to push the boundaries for timid folks like me.

eann 03-03-2013 10:05 AM

So far it's trditional for me....may one day venture to modern.

Bobbielinks 03-03-2013 11:47 AM

I love the traditional. I love the reproductions. I love the civil war. And, being a longarm quilter I am beginning to love the modern. However, I wonder why they are called 'modern' , as my Mother who passed away in 1994, made quilts that looked like these "modern" quilts back in the 80's.

Emma S 03-03-2013 12:11 PM

Would have to say I never met a quilt I didn't like. My taste leans much more towards the simplicity and clean lines of the "modern" quilts. My kids would probable like them better too. Problem is, I don't think they would be as much fun to make as the more complex, colorful quilts.

MadQuilter 03-03-2013 12:15 PM

I'm going to sign up for a sashiko class next weekend. It is something I would not normally go for but I'm challenging myself. So yes, it's a good thing that we have so many creative outlets and inspirations.

Traditional Quilter 03-03-2013 01:22 PM

I go for the Traditional patterns and fabric. Love both 30's patterns and fabric. I tend to lean toward quilts that have a white or off white background with controlled colors. Love to do applique and someday I'll finish my Baltimore Album. I l prefer planned quilting rather than the meandering quilting done on so many modern quilts.

charsuewilson 03-03-2013 03:33 PM

I like traditional pieced and modern pieced, not applique. I like geometrics, don't like florals, either in fabric or pieced designs, except for a very few pieced stylized floral designs. I like the modern colors, geometrics, and tesselations of Jinny Beyer's quilts, but not the floral borders. I'm not crazy about the historical reproduction fabrics. I like modern colors better. All of this being said, I've still done a number of appliqued quilts, particularly for baby quilts.

loves_2_quilt 03-03-2013 03:45 PM

I like using traditional patterns with a modern twist....a log cabin in blacks and white. I usually stick to more traditional quilting. There are no quilt police so do what makes you happy.

Traditional patterns are my favorite; but I enjoy trying different styles. Isn't it wonderful that we have such a variety of quilting patterns!

GagaSmith 03-03-2013 06:20 PM

I did traditonal quilting for many years and kind of got out of quilting until I started seeing modern quilts. They piqued my interest and got me excited about quilting again. I still like traditional style but prefer doing modern for now. I love looking at all of them though. I can appreciate a beautiful quilt whatever the style.

sewmary 03-03-2013 06:48 PM

I gravitate to the modern although I am making a traditional for my sis that I like too. I am going to use some very modern fabrics to make a churn dash, just like someone else mentioned!

Kris P 03-05-2013 05:18 AM

My tastes fall somewhere in the middle. I'm not fond of super tiny pieced blocks, and especially not quilts where every block is different (block of the month types) But I'm also not amazed by quilts that look more like a pieced back with lots of negative space. However, when the negative space is professionally quilted to add amazing texture (like Angela Walters or Judi Madsen) I love the look. It's just a little (a lot) beyond my FMQ skills at this point.

NorthernSkyQuilts 03-05-2013 05:23 AM

I love, love, love landscape quilts! My mind is challenged on how to bring the photo to life.

MaryAnnMc 03-05-2013 05:36 AM

I have a friend who had been trying to drag me into the quilt world for years, and I had resisted vigorously. While I appreciated the work and admired the quality, I just couldn't see myself making one. And then I discovered the Modern Quilt Guild, and it was all over! I now own three machines, have the significant part of a room dedicated to quilting, and I'm building a lovely stash. There is something about the simplicity of design and color that appeals to me, which is funny, because it's nothing like me.

mom-6 03-05-2013 06:44 AM

I love all different kinds of quilts, whether or not I will ever make one of a particular style. Some I see and think I could never do that, then a couple years later find myself doing it. Others I see and think I want to do that but I would change xxxx and can't wait to get started. And every once in awhile I see one and actually do it like the original. LOL!

Me too! I like to keep changing things up, keep it interesting-

Sewnoma 03-05-2013 09:53 AM

I'm just glad that quilting is so "alive". I feel like I will never finish exploring all of the possibilities. So far most of my quilts have been more traditional, but I'm inching my way towards modern and definitely intend to explore there.

What's interesting to me is that I have a much wider taste in quilts than I do in most other things. I wear dark neutral colors almost exclusively. My house is in a lot of neutral/natural colors with lots of wood...but in quilts, I will layer up lime green, turquoise and bright orange and think it's beautiful! I guess all the neutral decor in my house means almost any color quilt will go! LOL

If you think the definition of *modern quilt* refers to simple piecing, you need to do a lot more peeking around.. take a look at Judy Dales, Katie Pasquini, Jinny Beyer, and dozens of other creative quilters....:)

Emma S 03-05-2013 12:04 PM

Sheepshed: I thought the minimalist quilts were considered to be "modern". Will check out Judy Dales and Katie Pasquini. I am very familiar with Jinny Beyer and love her designs, not even mentioning her beautiful fabrics. Maybe what I really need is a definition of "modern quilts".

MaryStoaks 03-05-2013 12:37 PM

I like all styles but my 6 kids, all grown with families, all prefer the less busy modern patterns. Easy for me, they really use them too.

I think this wonderful variety is what gets us hooked: you can never get bored because there are SO many fabrics, patterns, styles, books, new tools to try, etc. Years ago I tried appliqué several times with different teachers. None of it appealed to me so I gave up on that aspect of quilting. Now, several years later, I find myself TEACHING appliqué! How amazing is that? We have different chapters in our quilting lives, and there is so much to explore and learn. Never say never!

I used to make traditional quilts for our annual church quilt raffle. I found that the traditional appealed to the generation that already has many quilts or make their own. Next I did geometric quilts and they went over well with the baby boomer generation. Now I am geometric/modern and the men are a lot more interested in buying tickets. Seems that I have struck a happy medium.

I go in spells. I like all scrappy then all modern, then all traditional, then easy, then applique, then pictorial. My moods switch a lot. I really don't care for the abstract art type quilts or the heavy thread painting look. And quilts with a lot of paint on them reminds me of the needlework designs that are half painted and half stitched.

I like traditional quilts especially Thimbleberries and some more primitive style with wool applique on them. I also have an inexpensive Brother sewing/embroidery machine that I have some some 4 x 4 redwork blocks and will put them together with some red 30's fabric.

MamaInRed 03-05-2013 08:46 PM

I love all styles, but tend to lean more to traditional styles. As I improve my skills I hope to reach out of the box & try some other styles as well.

One time I entered such a cross stitch project in the county fair. At least half of the picture was printed on the fabric. The rest was cross stitched in blocked off spots. I think I won a blue ribbon for it when it really didn't deserve NEARLY as many accolades as an enormous detailed Norman Rockwell design I did in which I think I got a second place ribbon.

It struck me as funny and made me wonder if the judges didn't realize that half of it was just a preprinted design.

I find the modern quilt movement to be very exciting, many of them don't fit into my home decorating style but I still love to look at them and learn from them. And I think it's fun to see a new wave of quilters contributing to quilting as a whole.
