Quilting a T-Shirt Quilt
 

I am ready to quilt a t-shirt quilt and have halfway decided to quilt X's in the t-shirt blocks. I saw one done like this recently and it looked nice. I'm not in love with this idea but I am also not getting paid much to do this quilt. I think the part I don't like is quilting over the pictures(?) on the t-shirts. I have also seen meandering quilting done on this type of quilt and again, it looked fine. I'd welcome any suggestions or just tell me to get over it and quilt my X's. Thanks.

Are you quilting this on a LA or Domestic Sewing machine? I have done all overs on T-shirt quilts and they look fine once they are all done. Prior to getting my LA I tied them every 3" ignoring the designs printed on the T-shirts and that looked fine as well. A big X through the shirt could probably look OK as long as you fulfill the minimum quilted spacing the batting requires. It is kind of hard to offer suggestions without seeing the quilt and knowing what you are working with.

DD meandered on the Tshirt quilt she made for me. It looked good.

As Feline Fanatic mentioned it depends on your batting. I like to use Quilter's Dream Poly because you can quilt every 12" with it. That way I can do closer quilting in the blank parts of the block, but can just outline around the graphics. A friend has used invisible thread and she liked that.

I do a lot of t-shirt quilts. I don't normally sew over the logos - they can be a PIA if they're really "rubbery" and I like the look when you quilt around the logo and it puffs out after washing. I made 2 t-shirt quilts last year. I had them quilted with computerized border to border design and color appropriate thread. They turned out just fine, even over photos. I believe it will hold the t-shirts better, without sags, for the long term.

I agree. Do an all over design and I think you'll be happiest and it will take you less thinking time.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I used my DSM and Quilters Dream Cotton Request. It allows 8" between quilting lines which worked out fine. I made my X's and some minimal meander-like quilting on the sashing and borders. She got what she paid for.

"She got what she paid for." LOL My first t-shirt quilt was for a friend. We made the deal that I would make it as an experiment and she would pay for supplies - that came to around $100. It was so freeing to make it knowing that she was getting what she paid for! (No mistaking, please - I did the best possible job I could, added an embroidered label she hadn't expected. It was a great job, but ... still made me so much more comfortable that we had a "deal" about it.) I'm now doing 3 more as commissions. I charged enough that I hope others won't want me to do one for them, too! :)

i kinda outline the design on the shirt ...if it needs more i add some background where there is no print ....good luck can't wait to see it when done
