Quilting thread color advice, please.
I am going to start quilting a white wholecloth quilt. Can anyone tell me if it is difficult to quilt with white thread? I was wondering if it would be hard to see where you had been with white on white. Thanks for any input.

In my experience, it is easier to see white thread on white, then it is to see black thread on black, but both are hard on the eyes.

I would think it would be hard to see. But my eyesight is awful.

I haven't had too many problems - been quilting at my church for about 4 years total and we had a whole cloth white one recently. (I'm 51, wear bifocals for nearsightedness and astigmatism).
I'm curious about black on black too as some "artsy" quilt ideas I hope to pursue will involve that. And I will probably have to do them on my own, even if I intend to donate them, because the church ladies are used to just using white thread for everything. Should be interesting . . . :D |
I'm nowhere near your league in quilting, so take anything I say with a grain of salt. I agree with Feline. I've done white on white and it's difficult but doable, but black on black (that I'm working on) is driving me bonkers!

I've sewn and picked out many a white on white garment seam, with little trouble. A good light works wonders.

White on white hasn't been too difficult for me, but you need to adjust the lighting so that you can see where you've been.

White on white is easier because you can see a shadow when the light is right. There is no visible shadow with black on black.

Be sure you have very good lighting.
Year ago my Mom said it was hard to sew black on black - especially after dark. I took it as a put off. Guess what? I now know what she meant. I find it much easier to see during the day, if if shades are not open. My 47 YO Daughter is starting to see what I mean. |
