Quilting Thread
 

Does anyone use signature cotton thread? I usually use king tut varigated thread, which I like. This thread can be pricey. I thought I would try the signature varigated thread. I haven't been quilting very long, so I would really appreciate your opinions.

My machine (Janome 1600 on a New Joy frame) prefers King Tut, so that's what I use. Too much of a headache to rip out everything if the machine doesn't like it. JMO.

Having said that, I'll use whatever I have for piecing, but I've recently fallen in love with Bottom Line for hand applique and piecing mini quilts.

I like Bottom Line in my bobbins. I started using it on my LA, but have started using it in my bobbin for piecing. It's a 60 wt thread, so you can get a lot of thread on your bobbin.

I tried using Signature thread several times and found it ravels and breaks easy. The amount you save to me is not worth the aggravation. Sandy 64

If you've been using King Tut, you will be spoiled at using anything else. I too use King Tut, but occasionally, I use Essential.....but if I have something special, I'll revert back to KT. I hate ripping out problems.

I purchased some Signature and had no trouble sewing with it after adjusting tension. BUT it is so linty, I have use compressed air in the entire bobbin area after ever empty bobbin. I won't be buying more.

I have a Gammill and use mostly Signature thread with no problems. I understand Gammills like Signature. I have also used Marathon thread, which I like alot, and wish they had more colors. It's not much more expensive than Signature, and I like the quality better. I recently bought some King Tut, but haven't tried it yet. I bought it to try to get a better color match for a specific quilt, and it turned out that the thread I already had on hand was best, so the King Tut threads are still unused.

I like Aurifil 50wt 2-ply variegated thread for quilting, but I think it is considerably thinner than King Tut (which I haven't used). I like it because it is very smooth, creates almost no lint, and because it is a fine thread the bobbin holds more of it (so I don't have to change the bobbin so often). I use this thread for piecing also. My machine loves it, and I love it!

If you want to try out Aurifil, http://www.sewezdesigns.com is having a terrific close-out sale on it for the rest of May. It is only $6 per spool, so is a really good deal if you buy multiple spools. My LQS carries only a few colors and charges about $11 per spool.

Have never tried signature cotton thread. I use Aurefill for piecing, and Maxi-Lock for quilting on my mid-arm.

I had piece and hand quilt so I can't help you on this one.
