Quilting thread vs sewing thread for binding.

I've tried sewing binding down by machine and not happy with how it looks. So I sew the binding down by hand and I'm OK with this process. Gives me time to plan the next project or two. Somehow I got a few spools of quilting thread so now am using that thread to finish the binding. Saves the other thread for piecing.

I thought that quilting thread is usually heavier/thicker than "regular" thread.

How is it working out for sewing the binding down?

Works like a charm. Thread is a little thicker but I just use a needle with larger eye. In fact the needle I'm using I think IS for hand quilting.

I think hand quilting thread comes in a type that is coated. so it doesn't tangle. Not good for machine sewing. Not all hand quilters use this coated thread. It isn't required.

I use quilting thread to hand sew the binding too. I think it give a nice extra strength to a seam that will be tugged on so much. I use matching thread color and am well pleased on the finished binding.

I no longer hand quilt due to arthritis, so I use all my leftover hand quilting thread to sew bindings. I like that I can use a single thread, but if I don't have a color match and have to use regular thread, I double it.

I always use the stronger quilting thread to hand stitch the binding to the back of my quilts.

As I have a large supply of embroidery thread which is polyester, I can match my bindings pretty well. I also have a large selection of quilting thread in cotton so I pick from either one if I'm doing hand stitching to the backside. Lately I've been using a decorative stitch on my sewing machine to stitch down the binding.

I use a good quality thread that matches the binding. If your quilting thread is a good match, then use it.

Hand sewing the binding is my second favourite part of quilting. I use the ladder stitch so I don’t need pins or binding clips. The stitches are invisible so I don’t need to match colours. I have used hand quilting thread just to use it up as I don’t hand quilt any more. I’m a bit of a thread junkie so use what I have.
