Quilting Tools??

Hi, I keep reading about all sorts of new quilting tools and I began to wonder about them so.... What are your favorite quilting tools, what do you use them for and how often do you use them? Do you have any that you regret buying?

quiltinghere 02-15-2014 12:15 PM

Regret? Probably rulers that do one specific thing and nothing else. Too far away to list them...

Favorite NEW tool is a NEW Rotary Blade!

Love:
biggest Olfa (60 mm) rotary cutter (thought 45m was great until I got hold of the 60mm)
Olfa cutting mat: doesn't dull my rotary cutter
Sew-Ezi table for my quilting machine
My baby lock quilter's choice machine
My 6 1/2 by 18 inch ruler with the purple 1/2 inch mark
Accuquilt fabric cutter with (5 inch squares, tumbler, log cabin, and a few other favorites)
special needles for hiding threads (open top of needle so you just pop the thread in)
small rotating cutting mat
gingher scissors (purchased a while ago)
1/4 inch foot with guide (so much easier on the eyes)
the speciality storm at sea rulers... so much better than pp'ing it .

Wasted money:
rag die for accuquilt
lots of the specialty rulers (now that I have accuquilt cutter)
a lot of the tools they have for FMQ on a DSM. Nothing has improved my ability there.

When I was a teenager, I watch my Great Aunt Maude quilt with cardboard templates and a pair of scissor. So my favorites tools are my 45mm rotary cutter, cutting mat and acrylic rulers since they are the best invention since sliced bread !! :)

yel 02-15-2014 12:46 PM

maniac quilter ...i was one of those cardboard and scissor girls i will have to agree....but i have to say back in those days the side of the cracker box was a lot thicker that it is today ......

I love gadgets so don't ask m too many to list, I do have some that I wouldn't buy again if had the choice as they collect dust

LivelyLady 02-15-2014 04:16 PM

This topic keeps coming up. So, you can search the board for many more threads like this.

I don't get excited about specialized tools. I have a rotary cutter and board, a ruler, and the Starmaker 5, 6, and 8 for the angles needed to make a 5, 6, and 8 pointed star. I also have a ruler with curves, but haven't used it since the class I bought it for. I could see buying the wedge and pattern for the spiral quilts, but they could also be done with a template.

Tfch8184 02-15-2014 05:53 PM

My favorite is square rulers. I hate squaring stuff up so I have just about every sized square ruler I can find. Makes things so much easier. Next to stash up is a good flying geese ruler or a hoard of rectangle rulers lol.

Cagey 02-15-2014 05:59 PM

I probably have a couple of templates and rules that I could do without but who knew? Otherwise I can't think of anything I would do without.

My Angler ruler
My 6.5x24.5 Creative Grids ruler- Doesnt slide at all !!!
My 4x36 Olipfa ruler - great for strips
Rotary cutter with a new blade..
Elmers Glue

terri bb 02-15-2014 06:45 PM

i think the fons and porter half and square is one of my favorites. no more squaring up those HST's!

marsharini 02-16-2014 01:41 AM

Hands down the best thing I bought is the Shape Cut Plus. I can zip out those strips and squares in no time. I just cut out a bunch of blades for a Dresden fan quilt I'm working on and was amazed at how easy it turned out to be! I loved working with precuts, but the pinked edges drove me nuts.

Onebyone 02-16-2014 04:07 AM

I think rotary cutter, mat, rulers, ripper and scissors are a given just like a sewing machine and thread. My favorite tools are:

1. Go die cut machine
2. Clover Wonder clips

Rose Marie 02-16-2014 07:08 AM

Yes to the Clover Wonder clips, great for bindings.
Love Eleanor Burns flying geese rulers and all her other methods, always the easiest way.
I prefer over size and trim down methods and her triangle sq up ruler only needs one cut to sq up.

Silver Needle 02-16-2014 07:14 AM

Deb Tuckers rulers and patterns and laminated pages for other ways to use the rulers. I have almost all of them. Also the True Cut rulers and rotary cutter and their most expensive blade sharpener. I don't remember the last time I bought new rotary blades. These are my most go to tools but I love gadgets of all kinds.

Annie Pearl 02-16-2014 09:34 AM

My favorite is my 6x24 inch ruler and my 60mm rotary cutter. I just ordered a jelly roll ruler, can't wait to try it. I'm also a sucker for quilt books, I love them. I have stacks of them I look at for entertainment and inspiration.

meyert 02-16-2014 09:59 AM

I love my ShapeCut Plus... it makes the cutting so much easier

I,m with you, Nan. I've bought every ruler that is advertised, for, this, that, and everything. I could have a garage
sale on just rulers. You don,t need dozens of them. Just a few that measure most things.

Diana Lea 02-17-2014 04:42 AM

I love my iron. There is something about taking wrinkled fabric and making it crisp. It is like putting the life back in it.

ntroxel 02-17-2014 05:22 AM

I just received the Slidelock straight edge set. That is my favorite tool at this time. Of course I couldn't do without the cutting mat, rotary cutter and 18" by 6 1/2" ruler.

molsonbindie 02-17-2014 06:36 AM

Quilt Cut 2 for sure!!!!

I have to agree. I can't cut a straight line to save my life. I do everything with shapecut. I also love the Olfa circle cutter. It cuts a PERFECT circle up to 8.5" every time.

cdmmiracles 02-17-2014 03:57 PM

Shape cut plus is my all time favorite also.....I can cut strips and squares for an entire quilt in an afternoon. Also love my 1/4" foot with guide.....all the pieces using these two things just seem to fall together!!

JudyTheSewer 02-17-2014 04:21 PM

Here are two of my favorites that I didn't notice being listed yet: Electric Quilt 7 and extra fine glass head pins.

The design software is awesome for getting the scale of my blocks and borders to my liking and it also ensures that the final quilt size is what I had in mind.

The extra fine pins are great for getting the accuracy that I want when joining paper pieced sections and other inticate piecing situations.

fayeberry 02-17-2014 04:59 PM

I just bought the Quilters Slidelock and love it. I never use the round red plastic hoop thing that is supposed to make free motion quilting easier. Also I have not used the rotary cutter that requires 65 mm blades since I used up the original one. Too expensive to replace the blade. And I thought that cutter was such a bargain when I found it!

fallonquilter 02-26-2014 05:16 AM

I really, really love my Slidelock ruler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no more slipping when cutting those strips. Best ever. ( I bought the long one)
