I have some beautiful wool pieces that I really don't need for clothes, nor do our daughters say they want either.
I have been told you can make beautiful quilted pieces with Wool. Would anyone give me some ideas on how to use it in quilting? Most are large yardages of fabrics; not scraps. Thanks, Mariah |
You can use it just like any block pattern.

Have you looked into felting? The only thing I know about it is you start with a wool piece then shrink it (I think). Just google and lots comes up.
Instead of making blocks with the wool how about backing without batting? Just make sure it is pre-shrunk..... |
I was also wondering about that -
I have some wool garments that no seems to be interested in wearing - I don't want to do the felting - I was wondering if I just washed the wool in warm water, dried it in the dryer - see what, if anything happens to it - I think it will be okay - and then just cut it in large squares (8 inches or larger) - and used 3/8 inch seams - and put them together. It would make an awesome rag quilt, but I think I would rather try just "conventional" seams. Thoughts/ideas/suggestions, anyone? |
All I really know about quilting with wool is that growing up I know we had quilts made of wool for our winter beds. It seems in my memory that there were blocks, but also strips and smaller squares. It wasn't a crazy patch. I made a throw from wool clothing scraps, but I washed and dried everything first. I just made it with 4 inch squares, and had a flannel backing( also pre-washed and dried) We used it quite a lot, and it did get washed several times.

A friend of mine worked in a men's tailoring shop; they custom-made suits. She just gave me a large box of "sample" swatches size 6 x 8 inches. Most are 100% wool, some are wool silk. Can they be used together ? I also don't want to do a rag seam quilt but not sure what to do. Do you use batting? Seems like it would be too heavy. My first thought was to make a cover for my dog's bed but these are pretty nice. Thanks for the suggestions you've all posted so far.

After washing the pieces to "stabilize" them - I'm thinking sort of a "single-layer" rag type throw might be kind of fun.
(I know what I mean - does anyone else?) |
I think it would be a wonderful and warm quilt.
