Well, I got a note back from Carolyn Beam, the lady Barb in Arizona suggested might be able to help.

She did. The block is made with TWO 8-1/2" squares, and the instructions say cut them apart, spread them out, and sew them together, to make ONE block.

Too bad my brain was off a tad yesterday. I couldn't get past the initial eight and a half inch square.
